A new part of the Ohio 4-H ATV safety program is being able to offer the ASI RiderCourse. This course teaches the correct and safe way to operate and ride an ATV. A licensed ATV Safety Institute (ASI) Instructor in a controlled environment conducts this hands-on course. It offered the participants an opportunity to increase their safety knowledge and practice basis riding skills.
Currently the Ohio 4-H ATV safety program has 10 instructor volunteers to begin teaching the 4-H ASI RiderCourse.
The half-day course provided participants a great way to get started riding ATVs or to practice correct riding skills. The benefits of attending this course are: Improve riding skills Builds confidence Teaches how to “TREAD Lightly” Way to meet other ATV riders
How much does this course cost? The ATV Safety Institute (ASI) has valued this course at $75 for each youth 6-15 years of age and $125 per person over 15. However, the Ohio 4-H ATV safety program does not charge for this training because of the grant funding. However, a small user fee may be charged to cover expenses such as equipment, facility use, and snacks. What do the participants need to bring? Participants must wear the proper riding gear the whole time of the course. They need the following: DOT-approved motorcycle helmet Goggles or face shield Over-the-ankle boots Sturdy gloves Long pants Long sleeve shirt or jacket
Do I use my own ATV? Yes, you can use your own ATV. However, if you don't have an ATV of the appropriate size or do not own an ATV, please note that on your registration form and one will be made available for you at the training. *Some course locations may require you to bring an appropriate size ATV. How to make sure the participant has the right size ATV? The Consumer Product Service Commission along with the ATV Safety Institute has created guidelines for age appropriate riding. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE THE CORRECT SIZE MACHINE. Below are the guidelines to follow. On their registration form, it asks what size ATV they will provide, if they are bringing their own.
