What happens in orientation?
Your first academic meeting starts at 2:00 p.m. on Day 1 of your OSU orientation. During this session we will briefly discuss what it means to be a CFAES student, how to look at the big picture of degree planning, and how to schedule your classes for Autumn quarter. Completing this pre-orientation will help you choose an interesting and self-directed schedule.
An OSU Degree

CFAES offers three degrees: B.S. in Agriculture, B.S. in Food Science, and B.S. in Nutrition. These degrees require a minimum of 190 or 191 hours. Depending on the degree a significant portion of hours are drawn from a wide range of challenging general education university requirements known as General Education Curriculum (GEC). In order to earn a degree from The Ohio State University, students complete coursework from five areas:
- Major requirements
- Minor requirements in the case of the B.S. in Agriculture
- College requirements
- University requirements
- Electives
The Scheduling Session
While you will be reviewing materials and making course decisions, you will not be alone during the scheduling process. CFAES and other OSU staff members will be circulating throughout the room to help you with your academic scheduling session. The two key advisors in the room will be Dr. Jill Pfister (Assistant Dean, Academic Affairs) and Paul A. Heimberger (CFAES Academic Counselor). Once the actual scheduling begins, all you have to do is raise your hand and we will talk with you regarding your specific questions. Our goal is to make the scheduling process as easy and personally relevant as possible.
Schedule Input
After you have completed the final draft of your schedule during the Day 1 scheduling session, you will answer a few questions about the pre-orientation materials you are now using. Then we will collect your schedule and you will be free to go to dinner and attend the evening activities.
Once all of the students in the room have completed their schedules, those who helped you schedule will return to the office and enter your schedule into the computer. You will receive your official autumn schedule during the academic session on Day 2.
Now that you have read an overview of what happens during orientation you can see how important and valuable it will be to have a "jump-start" by reviewing key course descriptions and making preliminary choices.
