Study Abroad in China

Location

As the capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing provides an ideal setting for the study of Chinese history and development. Beijing is not only the political and administrative center of China, it is also China's greatest repository of monuments and treasures from the imperial era. Markets, museums, parks and cultural centers abound for the interested student.

University

The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is China's premier institution for programs in agriculture. With departments in Agronomy, Food Science, Horticulture, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science among others, the Chinese Academy is world renowned for its research and international collaboration.

Courses & Credits

Students will earn 15 hours of graded Ohio State credit. All courses are taught in English by faculty at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. No previous knowledge of the Chinese language is required. Basic conversational Chinese for everyday situations will be provided.

Agricultural Economics 697: Chinese Agriculture in Transition. This course is designed to provide students with a broad view of the economic development process of developing countries, and some of the important developmental issues being studied generally in low-income countries and specifically in China. 5 quarter hours of credit.

Rural Sociology 697: Demographics and Rural Development in China. This is a survey course designed to acquaint students with demographics and the history and current situation of rural development in China. 5 quarter hours of credit.

International Studies 697: Chinese History and Culture. This course includes Chinese history from the early dynasties through the present. Much background information is provides prior to excursions to historical sites. There will be discussions and presentations on Chinese culture and society. 5 quarter hours of credit.

Accomodations

Students will be housed in double rooms with shared bathroom facilities at the CAAS Guest House. Meals are included for the first week only and for some of the excursions. After the first week, students will be on their own for meals. Students should plan to spend approximately $6.00 U.S. per day for meals.

Field Trips

Field trips and excursions to areas of agricultural, historical and cultural interest are an integral component of the program. To avoid heavy tourist traffic, many excursions are planned for a week-day and classes are held on Saturday mornings. The program fee includes a three day excursion to Xian. Other travel days are provided for independent excursions at the student's own expense.
