Study Abroad in the Czech Republic
Location
The city of Prague is one of the most spectacular of all European
capitals. It is situated on the Vltava River and ringed by
seven hills. Spared by the bombs of World War II, Prague boasts
many Gothic and Baroque architectural treasures. It is surrounded
by no fewer than 14 castles. Direct rail and bus service link
the city to Vienna, Berlin, Munich and Warsaw.
University
The Ohio State program is located at Czech Agricultural University,
approximately 30 minutes outside of Prague. Czech Agricultural
University offers a full curriculum in Agronomy, Horticulture,
Natural Resources, and Animal Science to students from Eastern
Europe and other parts of the world. A bus/metro pass connects
students to downtown Prague on a daily basis.
Courses & Credits
Students will earn 15 hours of graded Ohio State credit. All
courses are taught in English by faculty at the Czech Agricultural
University. No previous knowledge of the Czech language is
required.
Agricultural Economics 697: Transition and Development
in Agriculture. This course provides students with a broad
view of the economic development process of developing countries,
and some of the important developmental issues being studied
in low income countries and specifically in the Czech Republic.
5 quarter hours of credit
Rural Sociology 697: Integrated Rural Development.
This is a survey course designed to acquaint students with
the history of development and its theories and strategies.
There is a special focus on rural issues in the development
of the Czech Republic as a geographic region of study. 5 quarter
hours of credit.
International Studies 697: Czech Language, History
and Culture. This course will include basic conversational
Czech language; history of the area and country; and discussions
on Czech culture and society. 5 quarter hours of credit.
Accomodations
All classrooms and dormitories are located
at Czech Agricultural University. Students are housed in double
rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Meals are catered at
a campus restaurant. Bus and metro service link the campus
to the center of Prague. Students will increase their understanding
of Czech life and culture through a 3-4 day homestay with
a local Czech family.
Field Trips
Field trips and excursions to local farms, agricultural projects,
rural communities, and sites of historical and cultural importance
are an integral component of the program.
Sample Itinerary
Week One
Introduction to the Czech Agricultural University and Prague.
Two classes in the morning and one class in the early afternoon.
Excursion into Southern Bohemia.
Week Two
Morning and afternoon classes. Excursion to Zihle Agricultural
farm and an excursion to Northern Bohemia.
Week Three
A three day family stay over the holiday week-end. Morning
and afternoon classes. A free week-end for individual trips.
Week Four
Morning and afternoon classes. Excursion to Karlovy Vary.
A free week-end
Week Five
Morning and afternoon classes. Excursion to Skoda Mlada boleslav.
Begin six day study tour in Czech Republic and Moravia.
Week Six
Continue study tour in Czech Republic and Moravia. Final examinations.
Departure from Prague.
