Study Abroad in England


Location

Preston is the administrative, commercial, industrial, and cultural center of the county of Lancashire in the northwest of England. The town has approximately 129,000 people and provides a wide range of educational and leisure opportunities and facilities. The northwest corner of England includes within a relatively small area, important industrial/population centers such as Liverpool and Manchester as well as the tranquil and pastoral Lake District in Cumbria.


University

Myerscough College is one of the major Agricultural Colleges in England. It has a series of comprehensive programs in various areas of Agriculture, some leading to a Bachelor's degree. Areas of study include, for example, Animal Care and Welfare, Arboriculture, Ecology and Conservation, Horticulture, Landscape Practice, and Sportsturf. The college has excellent teaching resources with well-developed grounds for practical learning, a well-equipped library and computer facilities.
 

Courses & Credits

Students are required to take 15 credits in H&CS 697 during the Summer Quarter: These 15 credits are divided into three 5-credit groups. The 3 courses run concurrently through the 6-week program. Most of the activities occur during the stay in England, but preliminary meetings are required in Columbus during Spring Quarter in preparation for the program:

H&CS 697.01 - The constructed landscape I. British and American contrasts. An overview of the characteristics of constructed landscapes in the US and England.

H&CS 697.02 - The constructed landscape II: Evolution of English Landscapes. Examination of the English landscape through visits, discussions, lectures, and hands-on activities at Myerscough College.

H&CS 697.03 - The constructed landscape III: Landscape Industry and Operations in Britain. . Lectures, site visits and practical experience will illustrate the structure and operations of the landscape industry in England.



Accomodations

Students will stay in the Residence Halls of Myerscough College. These are modern, double occupancy rooms with communal bathroom and lounge area. Meals will be taken at the College Cateteria. A fully equipped gym and extensive sports facilities are available. Students are encouraged to participate in on-going campus activities to increase their exposure to English life. Some weekends will be free for personal activities.


Field Trips

Field trips and excursions to appropriate sites representing the broad landscape system of England are an integral component of the program. Visits to typical neighborhoods, nurseries, gardens, estates, garden centers, etc. are included. In addition, visits to appropriate cultural sites are included.
