Appalachian Cultural Awareness in Ohio: Understanding People and Place

Extension Program Resources-Community Development 1996

I. Title of Program or Issue:

Appalachian Cultural Awareness in Ohio: Understanding People and Place

A. Situational Statement:

Federally-defined Appalachia includes a region stretching from a few counties in northern Mississippi to southern New York state - parts of 12 states including Ohio, and all of West Virginia. It is frequently defined in terms of certain shared indexes of low incomes, poor health and limited access to health care, inadequate housing, and sub-standard education, reflecting chronic economic and population problems. But, it can also be defined as a shared cultural heritage of commonalities rich in tradition, history, relationships, self-reliance and close ties to family, land and spirituality. The region, maligned and misunderstood, experiences image problems mainly due to negative stereo-types which have long plagued the region and the Appalachians who have migrated into other areas including urban centers. Educators, service providers, and community leaders may be sabotaging their own programs by not recognizing the differences between clientele in urban and rural, especially Appalachian areas. Respecting differences and using them positively may enhance program efforts.
