I. Title of Program or Issue:

Backyard Composting

A. Situational Statement:

The ban of yard waste from landfills creates a challenge for many communities. Turning the responsibility back to homeowners is a part of the educational effort in backyard composting.

B. Description/Educational Objectives:

  • Understand the position of organic wastes in solid waste
  • Comprehend the basic science of biological degradation
  • Observe simple holding bin approach to composting
  • Discover (bust) the myths surrounding composting
  • C. Suggested Time Required for Program; Time of Year:

    2-3 hours; Autumn/Spring

    D. Audience and Level of Offering:

    Homeowners: Individual; Group program; County; Solid Waste District

    • Slide tape set (District offices)
    • Resource Teaching Guide
    • Fact Sheets
    • Supplies vary from free to hundreds of dollars (demonstration program)
    • 4-H materials also available
    • Resources also through solid waste districts
