Agricultural Safety and Health

Extension Program Resources-Community Development 2000

I. Title of Program or Issue:

Agricultural Safety and Health

A. Situational Statement:

In Ohio, 271,542 people live on approximately 80,000 farms. Many conditions peculiar to agriculture are conductive to unintentional injury: (1) work is done at all times of the day in adverse weather conditions, (2) many different types of hazardous equipment are used, (3) family members of all ages often participate in farm work, (4) old, and often unsafe, equipment is in use, (5) little formal training is provided in the operation of equipment, (6) farmers often work long hours and fatigue is common among farm workers operating potentially hazardous equipment, (7) seasonal or periodic use of specialized equipment without refresher training in proper use and handling, (8) agricultural equipment may be used for recreational as well as occupational purposes, and youth and the elderly are at most risk. The foregoing facts suggest a need for research, education and extension intervention activities that are unique to agriculture, it's workers and their families.
