January Calendar

Oatmeal Month

January is National Oatmeal Month, and what better way to stay warm than with a bowl of hot, tasty oatmeal. Club members can enjoy oatmeal for cereal in the morning, in cookies for a snack, and in breads and muffins any time of the day. Encourage club members to bring recipes from home that use oatmeal as an ingredient, and do some cooking with your members! Write to the Quaker Oats Company, c/o Oatmeal Month, P.O. Box 530 , Barrington , IL 60011 or call (312) 629-1234 for more information.

Universal Letter-Writing Week

January 1-7 is a time for people all over the world to send letters and cards to friends and family. Have your youths make new friends with other Cloverbuds and 4-H'ers from other counties and states. Have your club post either a state of Ohio map or a map of the United States . Keep a list of states or counties you have contacted and any replies they have received.

Milkman Delivers First Bottle of Milk

Milk in glass bottles was delivered for the first time on January 11, 1878 . Have your club members research to find out how milk was delivered before this. Ask them if milkmen still make home deliveries today. Most milk today comes in paper or plastic containers. Have club members discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using paper and plastic instead of glass.

Pooh Day

What is celebrated on Pooh Day? A.A. Milne's birthday on January 18 and his tales of Winnie the Pooh and friends. Share Selections from Winnie The Pooh, The House At Pooh Corner, and When We Were Very Young with your club. They are sure to enjoy the exploits of the lovable bear who has an incurable craving for honey! Have a Pooh Day complete with honey flavored Teddy Grahams.
