CLOVERBUD (K- 2) AT THE FAIR

EXTENSION CONTACT: Greg Siek, 216-429-8221 or Robin Stone, 216-429-8200, ext. 212

CLOVERBUD "SHOW AND TELL" INTERVIEWS: Monday, August 7, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 10, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., Junior Fair Building
NOTE: Cloverbuds with a "Cloverbud Animal Friend" should bring their animal for a "Show and Tell" on the day scheduled for that type of evaluation ( Tuesday– small animals; Wednesday– poultry; Thursday– rabbits; Friday– lambs and goats)

Cloverbuds should bring a favorite item to show judge and be prepared to talk about their activities. Mentors may be evaluated for One-on-One project assistance at this time as well.

1. For 4-H members 5 to 8 years old and in K through 2nd grade, the Ohio 4-H Cloverbud Activities will continue as the county program. This will generally be done in clubs -- either as a Cloverbud section of a 4-H club which also has older members or in clubs of Cloverbud 4-H members only.

2. Certain countywide activities, like the Speaking Skills and Fair programs, will have opportunities for Cloverbud members.

3. Older 4-H members are encouraged to participate in the 4-H One-On-One mentoring project and to mentor a Cloverbud. This mentoring is required for a "Cloverbud Animal Friend" and is ideally done over a period of months. Cloverbud mentoring at the Fair only is still a possibility but would ordinarily not be a One-on-One project for the Teen member.

4. At the Fair, Cloverbuds will have several opportunities to participate:

a. Mentoring: Cloverbuds who have a mentor will have opportunities to be with that mentor and observe and assist the mentor as is appropriate. A list of activities for mentors and Cloverbuds will be provided at the beginning of the Fair and each mentor should try to involve the Cloverbud in 3 to 5 of these. Participation in the 4-H 4-H Animal Science Showcase with mentors will fall into this category. Mentors and Cloverbud Members may present animals before Showmanship events in the Cow Palace as part of the "Cloverbud Animal Friend Parade."

b. Group Activities: (CLOVERBUD DAY CAMP) There will be special group activities in the area outside of the Junior Fair Building for Cloverbuds. These activities will be provided by volunteer leaders, 4-H staff and guest speakers. Parents and/or mentors should bring the Cloverbuds to these sessions. Some teen and adult volunteer help with these sessions is needed. Participation ribbons will be given for these activities. In 2006 these sessions will be held on Monday, August 7, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday, August 8, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon; Wednesday, August 9, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, and on Friday, August 11, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

c. Cloverbud Displays and Showcases: Cloverbud groups may display the results of their Cloverbud activities at either their club's booth at the Fair or in the special Cloverbud "Wall of Fame." They also may participate as a group in the 4-H "showcase" presentations at times scheduled with the 4-H Office. There is no competition involved in these activities and all participants will receive the Cloverbud ribbon for participation.

d. Cloverbuds and Judges: Judges will be invited to the Fair on Monday (3:00-5:00 p.m.) and Thursday (1:00-2:30 p.m.) to meet with the Cloverbud members (and with the Mentors). Additional "show and tell" experiences with "animal friends" will take place on the days indicated above. Judges will show an interest in the Cloverbud experiences during the past year and will go with the Cloverbud to the display if they have one at the fair. The judge will then evaluate the One-on-One project of the Mentor if this project was done by the member prior to the Fair. Note: It is not necessary that all mentors do the One-on-One project -- primarily this is for mentor-Cloverbud pairs that were established prior to the fair in the club setting.

e. Style Revue Participation: Cloverbuds involved in making any type of clothing accessory as a sewing activity are
invited to model the item in a noncompetitive class in the 4-H Style Revue on Monday, August 7 (rehearsal at 5:30 p.m.; Style Revue at 8:00 p.m.).
