4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

WELCOME to the on-line home of Cuyahoga County 4-H! 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. In Cuyahoga County, we hope to use this website to provide youth and adults who work with youth "hands-on" information to help build positive futures for all young people.

TIMELY TIPS FOR

Consider This Resolution: Help Youth Look Ahead This Year

As the new year begins, many of us make Resolutions to set self-improvement goals for the months ahead. As adults, we can put this period of reflection to good use if we help young people around us use some time to put their futures in focus. Some easy ways to do this are:

** encourage young people to make a list of their favorite school subjects, leisure time interests, and hobbies;

** ask them to list career goals which would involve using some of these talents and interests;

** suggest that they explore information on career web sites such as the Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, www.bls.gov/oco/, or books on careers recommended by your local librarian;

** suggest the send an e-mail message or write to a trade or professional association or union involved in the area of their career interest, to get additional information;

** encourage them to get involved in a club or extracurricular activity that involves developing some of the skills related to their career interests.

For more ideas on helping young people prepare for career success, check the Teens section of this web site. The site also has a list of further suggestions for parents in the Parents section. 4-H Clubs and projects can help young people learn about areas of career interest, and 4-H sponsors various career and college tours for teens.
