What is the Family Nutrition Program?

Ohio State University Extension's Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is funded by a grant throughout the Midwest Region Food and Consumer Service, United States Department of Agriculture. The Family Nutrition Program is sometimes referred to as the Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program. FNP is a joint partnership between the Ohio Department of Human Services and Ohio State University Extension in an effort to improve the level of nutrition education of families and individuals who are food stamp recipients or eligible nonparticipants in  non-EFNEP counties and food stamp recipients or eligible nonparticipants who are elderly and/or adults without young children in EFNEP counties.

The goal of the Ohio State University Extension "Family Nutrition Program" is to help county residents acquire knowledge and skills in the areas of nutrition,  money management and food safety. Educational programs and demonstrations are available upon request, free of charge.

The delivery of educational programs at the county level is done by the Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Agent and by a FNP Program Assistant. FNP targets food stamp program participants by distributing educational information through public service announcements, basic food and nutrition demonstrations, newsletters, fact sheets, individual consultations, and group educational sessions with displays and videotapes; and by using curriculum materials selected for the audience's unique diversity.

The FNP Program Offers:
  • Nutrition - Use of the Food Guide Pyramid, a guide to daily food choices, as set by the United States Department of Agriculture.
  • Meal Planning - Balanced menu and recipe planning for low-cost meals that meet the requirements of the Food Guide Pyramid.
  • Food Safety - Appropriate preparation and storage of foods to prevent food borne illnesses.
  • Shopping - Budgeting tips for better management of food dollars so an individual may make informed decisions.

What Counties Have FNP?

FNP began in Ohio in Fall 1992 (FY93) in 12 rural counties. It expanded in FY94 to include 23 rural counties, in FY95 to 43 rural counties, in FY96 to 66 Ohio counties, in FY97 to 68 Ohio counties, and in FY98 to 71 counties.
