4-H Self Determined Project Day Sunday, August 5, Noon - 5:00 PM
Bob Horton, Assistant Superintendent, horton.2@osu.edu

General Guidelines
1. Members must be enrolled in a 4-H 365 project for the year and selected at the county level to participate in this event.
2. Self Determined projects in Woodworking, Radio Controlled Vehicles, Natural Resources or Photography do not participate in this event. Rather, they are judged on separate days as designated in the 2001 Ohio 4-H State Fair Handbook.
3. If a member won a clock trophy in Self Determined Woodworking, Self Determined Radio Controlled Vehicles, Self Determined Natural Resources, or Self Determined Photography in 2000, the member is ineligible to participate in the 2001 Self Determined Project Day.
4. Counties may have one participant (any eligible age) in Class J-1.
5. Participants must bring their completed 4-H 365 project book and project records, a sample of their project work, and a display mounted on a 36" high by 48" wide cardboard tri-fold display board with 13" wings. The display must include Title of the Project, Background - historical or general information about your topic, Areas of Interest - areas of your project you chose to focus on, Results - what you did, Conclusion - what you learned.
6. Each participant will be limited to a 48" wide by 18" deep table top space in which to exhibit all materials. Electrical connections and additional exhibit space are not available to exhibitors.
7. Participants will be required to set up their display on the day of the event between the hours of 10:00 am - noon. Participants must set up their display on their own with no outside assistance.
8. The contest will begin promptly at noon. All participants must be in place and ready for judging at that time. Immediately following the presentation of awards at 4:30 PM, participants are required to remove their exhibit from the building by 5:30 PM.
9. Contestants are responsible for the safety of their display and display items at all times.

Class J-1 Self Determined project
Will consist of an oral interview with a team of judges along with a review of the participant's project book, tabletop display, and sample of project work. Members will be judged on Quality of Oral Presentation (25%), Overall Appearance of the Display (10%), Clarity of the Display (10%), Depth and Thoughtfulness of Project Idea (10%), Sample of Project Work (10%), and an overall analysis of the member's project experience (35%). Specific guidelines for the project display and oral presentation, along with a copy of the judges' score sheet, are available from the county Extension office.

Awards and Sponsors
1. All participants will receive a participation award sponsored by the Ohio State Fair.
2. Approximately twenty percent (20%) of the participants in Class J-1 will be eligible to receive Outstanding of the Day ribbons sponsored by the Ohio State Fair.
3. Approximately eight percent (8%) of the participants in Class J-1 will receive Superior ribbons sponsored by the Ohio State Fair.
