End-Of-Day Evaluations Help Teams
Jackie LaMuth, Program Development & Evaluation
"Wonderful! Can't believe you revised your program because of what I said last week!" "I've never had any speaker care enough to make changes so the program was more meaningful to me." These are typical of responses given to end-of-day evaluations of ManagementExcel workshops. Participants have stated how they will use the information and ways that the team might improve the next workshop. ManagementExcel teachers like it because of the quick feedback. It gives them ideas to help improve their teaching outlines for the next day of the workshop.
At the end of day one and day two of the MFS workshops, teams have used these questions:
1. Are we on target? Are we doing what you expected? Please explain.
2. Is there a management topic or issue that you hope we will include during the next two days?
3. Is there anything about the arrangements or the workshop itself that we can change to make this the best possible workshop for you?
4. (Day Two only) What has been most helpful to you, so far? Consider both day one and day two.
The team reviews the participants' comments and prepares to be responsive on the next day. Sometimes a comment refers to room conditions, a speaker's habits, the level of knowledge or a topic that is already part of the agenda. Sometimes a topic may be too specific for group time or may be more advanced or involved than time will allow. The team shares the changes it has made and offers to discuss other concerns during breaks.
Everyone has a winning experience. As a result of receiving instant feedback the team has an opportunity to meet the participants' needs by making adjustments in the workshop content and delivery. Participants are pleased that they get their most urgent needs met and questions answered. They are thrilled that the team cares enough to ask, listen and then make changes. The big bonus is the connection that develops between the participants and the team when the final evaluation is distributed. Because of team responsiveness to end-of-day evaluations, participants believe the team will use the information. So, they take the time to think about questions in the final evaluation and to make positive, constructive suggestions. They share in detail what they have learned and how they will use the information.
