January-December 1993. University Seed Grant ($19,000) from the Ohio State
University Office of Research for "Ecofeminism and Ecotourism: Women's Role
in Managing the Environment." This study explored the development of theory
and policy in ecotourism and women and the environment, especially in Latin
America and Africa, and the feasibility of future funding for research in
this area.
September 1992-August 1993. Research Grant ($22,000) from the Howard Heinz
Endowment and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of
Pittsburgh for "Beauty and the Beast: Administrative Decentralization, Structural
Adjustment and Empowerment in Rural Venezuela." This study focused on political
and administrative decentralization and its impact on decision making and
infrastructural endowments in a rural boom town.
September 1990-August 1992. Research Grant ($53,000) from the National Science
Foundation for "Pines, Planning and People: A Longitudinal Study of Social
and Cultural Change in Rural Venezuela." This on-going research project evaluates
the processes of social, economic, and political change in thirteen rural
