General
Information
The Plant Molecular Biology/Biotechnology (PMBB) program is comprised of faculty from six different departments at The Ohio State University. Plant science is a diverse discipline that contains both basic and applied research programs. In an ever-advancing technological age, in-depth knowledge of molecular biology and biotechnology is essential for new plant scientists. In an effort to address this need, the PMBB program has created the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. The SURE program is dedicated to providing interns an opportunity to explore the world of plant molecular biology/biotechnology.
This interdisciplinary internship includes investigations at the molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological, and environmental levels. Available research projects focus on many areas including plant molecular biology, molecular plant-microbe interactions, plant metabolic engineering, plant genomics, photosynthesis biochemistry, and chemical ecology.
Our 10-week internship offers students hands-on opportunities to apply molecular and biotechnological approaches to study key issues in plant science. Interns will conduct independent research projects under the guidance of faculty sponsors. Research may involve laboratory and/or field work depending on the project. Faculty sponsors will provide students with unique opportunities to learn essential research skills and techniques of modern scientific research.
Our Mission
The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) in the Plant Molecular Biology/Biotechnology (PMBB) program at The Ohio State University is designed to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to conduct research in cutting-edge areas that include, among others, plant molecular biology, molecular plant-microbe interactions, plant metabolic engineering, plant genomics, and chemical ecology. Interns work closely with nationally and internationally recognized researchers to identify and develop an independent research experience. Upon successful completion of the SURE program, participants will have developed independent research skills, have acquired an appreciation of science and the societal impact of plant research, and explored potential future employment or graduate school options.
