Agricultural Communication Courses The heart of the agricultural communication major is a coherent sequence of courses offered by the Agricultural Communication Program and the School of Communication. Following is a listing and brief description of courses offered by the Agricultural Communication Program. Click here to see what quarter(s) each class is offered. 200 Introduction to Agricultural Communication (5 credits) History and development of mass communication and its application in agriculture. Examination of career opportunities and skills needed to enter the profession. 300 Publication Design and Production (5 credits) Application of layout and design principles to produce print and electronic documents for various audiences. 367 Agricultural Issues in Contemporary American Society (5 credits) Development of skills in writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking. (GEC second writing and social diversity course.) 390 Oral Expression in Agriculture (5 credits) Oral expression theory and practice in an agricultural environment. 489 Agricultural Communication Internship (2-5 credits) Coordinated and supervised experience in agricultural communication including reporting, writing, editing, photography, graphics, broadcasting, advertising, and public relations. A final written report and an evaluation from the supervisor must be submitted to the instructor. This course is graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory. 500 Agricultural Feature Writing (5 credits) Principles and practice in feature writing. Laboratory experience in writing, editing, design, photography, and advertising to support production of college student magazine, the AgriNaturalist. 510 Campaign Design and Management in Agricultural Organizations (5 credits) Case studies, plans, and practices in agricultural public relations campaigns. 590 Senior Seminar in Agricultural Communication (5 credits) Capstone course addressing contemporary agricultural communication issues, including mass media consolidation, ethics, new technology, and the changing mission of land-grant universities. 593 Individual Studies (1-5 credits) Students plan, conduct, and report on a special problem in agricultural communication not included in regular course work. This course is graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory. 600 Legal and Ethical Issues in Agricultural Communication (5 credits) Examination and discussion of complex legal and ethical situations affecting socially responsible communication of food, agricultural and environmental topics. 650 Communication Strategies for Change and Development (5 credits) Examines communication competencies needed by development and social change practitioners. H683 Honors Project (1-10 credits) Conducting and reporting the honors project. Prerequisite: Enrollment in honors program and permission of honors project supervisor. This course is graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory. 694 Group Studies (1-5 credits) Selected special topics in agricultural communication. |
