Promote
Agricultural Safety and Health in America by Creating Partnerships Among
Multiple Organizations
Dear NIFS Member:
The 2004 NIFS
Conference and Annual meeting will offer exciting opportunities as well
as unique challenges because our organization is teaming up with the
NIOSH Agricultural Health & Safety Centers and the North American
Agromedicine Consortium. All three organizations will come together
at this conference under the theme of creating partnerships across multiple
disciplines.
The board of
directors for the National Institute for Farm Safety and our NIFS conference
chair Steve Freeman are partnering with the conference host, the High
Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety to make
this conference special. Our goal is to provide the usual NIFS conference
experiences plus the added bonus of interaction with the membership
of these other related organizations. As you look over the preliminary
agenda, you should see the similar events from past NIFS conferences
like the Professional Improvement session, Issue committee meetings,
banquet, and others. Then there are new activities that are available
to our members along with the opportunity to converse with other professionals.
Take advantage of all these conference features.
As you
prepare for this conference please make your participation as a NIFS
member known. Be sure to register to the conference as a NIFS
member and make your hotel reservations the same way by using the NIFS
room code CQOCNIF. It is important for our organization that our members
are clearly identified. Some activities like family or spouse programs
will be handled after everyone one is on site. Check for more information
after arriving. There will be plenty of choices for things to do. This
wonderful resort has lots of fun and educational experiences awaiting
us.
It is through
our varied experiences that we gain understanding and knowledge. This
understanding and knowledge are the tools used to forge partnerships
and these potential partnerships are the main reason for this joint
conference.
The NIFS board
of directors and Steve Freeman look forward to your participation in
this year’s special conference. Stop and visit with us during
the conference when you find the time.
Sincerely,
Bruce Stone, NIFS President
Chuck Schwab, NIFS President-elect
David Hard, NIFS Board of Directors
Tom Karsky, NIFS Board of Directors
Cheryl Skjolaas, NIFS Administrative Director
Steve Freeman, NIFS Conference Chair

| Location |
Conference
Location:
The
Keystone Resort and Conference Center spans
seven miles along the Snake River and encompasses three spectacular
mountains – Dercum Mountain, North Peak and The Outback. Keystone
also features award winning dining, vibrant villages, two championship
golf courses, Rocky Mountains’ largest and most distinguished
Conference Center and incredible lodging and guest amenities.
Keystone is located approximately
95 miles west of Denver, approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes drive time
from Denver International Airport (DIA). Transportation needs from DIA
to Keystone, as well as throughout the resort, are easily accessible
(see Transportation).
Climate
June can resemble early spring
at lower altitudes. Expect cool and sunny weather, requiring sweater
and jackets for comfort. Keystone lies at 9,300 feet above sea level.
It is recommended that people contact their personal physicians
if there are any health concerns associated with the altitude.

Family
Activities:
Adventure Passes:
These passes are “sampler” packs of the activities available
throughout the resort. As one staff member explained it allows people
to try things out before purchasing more time or the rental equipment.
There were also a variety of coupons included with the room. Summer
schedule of activities is not available at this time. The adventure
staff offers bike rentals, canoe rentals, etc. One example of activities
available is the llama hike and lunch on the summit that might be something
for family members.
Educational Tours:
A NIFS tradition of an educational tour will be offered. More information
about the specifics will be made available later. The planning group
is solidifying options available to conference participants and those
might be the high county ranch tour and/or a high country rescue. The
Summit County is 70+% government lands and 36,000 acres of ski resorts.
More detail information will be forward as these options are determined.

Transportation
Air:
Keystone Central Reservation
Department has joined with several major air carriers to offer group
transportation packages. These packages include round trip airfare and
ground transportation (shuttle between DIA and Keystone). By booking
lodging reservation through Keystone, the Saturday overnight stay airline
requirements can be avoided. Tickets may be purchased directly from
Keystone, or through your local travel agent. To take advantage of this
offer, call the Conference Reservations Department at 1-800-258-0437
to book this travel package. Please refer to the group code CQOCNIF
when making a reservation by phone or fax.
Ground
Transportation to Conference
Transportation
needs from the Denver
International Airport (DIA) to Keystone, as well as within the resort
are easily accessible.
Resort Express:
This shuttle service is tied with the Keystone Resort and agents can
help book this service. Things to remember – earliest shuttle
is 5:30 am so earliest flight out is 8:30 am. The summer shuttle schedule
goes every 90 minutes. The cost is $53.00. If a single traveler or for
those not wanting to drive in the mountains, it’s a convenient
way to go. The shuttle drivers were very informative and you may learn
about things along the route such as gold mining area, Coors plant and
water source, were to find Buffalo Bill Cody’s burial site, and
seeing impact of last winter’s avalanche. In the airport the reservation
desk is right by the rental car area and very accommodating. Flight
info is needed to make a reservation and you must pay for trip at time
you make the reservation.
Rental Cars:
Rental Car area is easily accessible and marked very well with road
signs. Leave plenty of time for travel from site back to airport.
Ground
Transportation while at the Conference
Shuttles:
The shuttles are really good and convenient. Transportation could take
20 minutes from the Mountain House to the conference center. Compared
to other conferences this shuttles service is good. The shuttles do
have mechanical lifts, but the buses do not although special arrangements
can be made.
Buses: Summit County has free bus service. This means
you could hop the bus to shop your heart out at the outlets in Silverthorne
or grocery shop in Dillion or head over to other areas like Breckenridge
or Beaver Creek. Dillion has a microbrew “The Dam Bar”.
Shipping
Information:
If you are planning to ship
materials to the conference, Keystone-Vail Resort has some detailed
information. The instructions on how to label, when to ship, insurance,
material handling service, and limitations will be posted soon. You
can also contact Keystone-Vail Resort at (970) 496-4142.
