The swine center was built in 1970 and has seen several recent renovations. The facilities house 100 females which are farrowed in 24 farrowery cartes eight times per year. There are grower-finish facilities for 300 animals and nursery facilities for up to 450 animals. The main sow herd consists of Yorkshire x Landrace females and they are artificially inseminated to a Duroc sire line. There are also 25-35 llitters per year that are sired by show pig sires. The show pig litters are used primarily for teaching and extension. The main sow herd is used for nutritional research trials. The offspring from this sow herd is also used for nutritional studies in the nurseries, grower-finish trials, and reproductive physiology studies. The nutritional studies are conducted by Dr. Donald Mahan and the reproductive trials are conducted by Dr. William Pope.
