Ecological Paradigm

  Facilities: Waterman Dairy Center

2433 Carmack Road
Columbus OH 43210

614-292-6759

Manager: Reagan Bluel
Manager: John Lemmerman

The dairy farm is located on the main campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. Two full time managers coordinate all aspects of a 140-cow herd in the heart of Columbus. A student work force of 10 to 16 students carry out most of the tasks normally associated with a full time working dairy farm. If it’s hands on experience you want, this is the place. Talk about rural urban interface, we live it every day. Visitors are welcome by appointment.

The Waterman Dairy currently has 110 Holstein milk cows and 30 Jerseys.
There are 85 Holstein and 35 Jersey replacements. Currently there are 125 acres of corn grown for silage production, and 65 acres of pasture. Cows are milked in a double eight herringbone parlor built in 2002. The parlor is equipped with automatic takeoffs.

Cows are housed in a barn with 100 free stalls and in another barn with 65 tie stalls. Most of the manure is handled through a flush system. Replacements and dry cows are housed in free stalls or loose housing. Calves are raised in hutches. The animals are used actively for teaching and research programs.
