Welcome
to
4-H
in the Classroom !
Here is your opportunity to enhance your students classroom experience
through low-cost, hands-on curriculum developed by Extension faculty at
The Ohio State University.
These programs:
-
Stimulate students to further their interest in science
and math.
-
Integrate into, rather than add to, your teaching
load.
-
Work in sequence or independently within a particular
unit of study.
-
Address science as well as math, language arts, and
social concepts.
-
Enhance students understanding of difficult concepts
through a variety of hands-on activities, experiments and student-ready
materials.
-
Allow students to apply science to real-life situations
while developing science thinking and processing skills.
Fishy
Science
Grades 3-6
Welcome to the world of Fishy Science! The purpose of this program is
to introduce some basic concepts about fish through the use of an aquarium,
select activities and experiments. Through viewing the Eyewitness
video, students take a dive into the waters of the world to discover the
most exotic creatures in nature. Students experience hands-on experiments
involving osmosis, fish parts, sensory features and abilities of fish,
as well as differences among the species.
Four Lessons with Activities
-
Lesson 1: How Fish Swim
-
Lesson 2: How Fish Breathe
-
Lesson 3: Sensory Features and Abilities
-
Lesson 4: Special Adaptation to Water
The
Incredible Egg
Grades 3-6
Which came first? Students can be the judge with this unique curriculum.
These activities integrate the concepts of chick embryology with easy-to-use
math, science and language arts. Through the use of photographs and
artwork the students chart the early stages of a chicks life.
This four-lesson plan includes:
-
Parts of a Raw Egg
-
Strength of the Egg Shell
-
Observing Stages of a Developing Embryo
-
Observing a Fertilized Egg Hatch
Hatching chicks in the classroom can increase student interest in this
eggciting curriculum! The Ashland County Extension Office can provide
you with fertilized eggs and an incubator for use with the curriculum.
Rockets
Away
Grades 4-8
Blast off for an action packed adventure in math, engineering, aerospace,
and physics with this three or four unit study of rocketry science!
Lessons in motion, gravity, and aerodynamics send the students interest
soaring. All this leads up to the ultimate thrill - building and
launching their own rockets.
Among the activities:
-
Understanding and applying Newton's Three Laws of Motion
-
Observing the relationship between force and mass
-
Testing turbulence
-
Exploring stability and motion
-
Constructing and launching a 2-liter bottle rocket
The teachers guide comes complete with lesson plans. An optional
IBM compatible computer diskette presents problem simulations and design
and flight configurations for 2-liter bottle rockets. Also included
is a program for recording and analyzing launch data.
Breads
of the Harvest
Grades 3-6
Through this unique project youth get the opportunity to study American
history from a new angle: by studying about the history of bread.
Students will develop science skills like analyzing, experimenting, making
assumptions and using scientific tools while learning about the lifestyles
and traditions of the pilgrims.
Topics that may be covered:
-
Early lifestyles of the pilgrims
-
Yeast and quick breads
-
The business of baking
-
Let’s bake the bread
Students end this project by making their own loaf of bread!
Other Lessons
Available:
Ohio Birds - Learn about bird identification, habitats, migration,
bird nests and houses, what birds eat, and how they fly. Build your
own birdfeeder or make a bluebird trail.
Electricity - Explore the science of electrical energy.
Build circuits with batteries, light bulbs and wire, learn about magnetism,
and investigate the difference between series and parallel circuits as
you build your own switches.
Water Wise – Investigate the properties of water through many
hands on experiments. Unit concludes with a game that explores the
travel of a drop of water through the environment.
Plants – Start plants from seed, learn about plant parts and
what parts we eat, transplant seedlings and experiment with different growing
variables. A gro-lab is available to use in your classroom.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Ohio State University Extension, Ashland County, has many resources
available for classroom teachers.
We can also provide instructors to come into your classroom and
lead these activities.
Programs are currently being scheduled for the 2003-2004 school year.
Please give us a call to sign up for a program(s) or for more information.
