Ashland County is located in north central Ohio. Contiguous
counties are Wayne, Holmes, Knox, Richland, Huron, Lorain and
Medina. According to the 2003 Ohio Agr. Statistics, the county
has 1090 farms with an average size of 153 acres. Total land in
farms is 167,000 acres. Major crops include corn, soybeans and
hay. The major livestock enterprises include dairy and cattle and
calves. 2002 cash receipts from marketing of farm commodities
totaled 50.9 million. Major commodities include milk, cattle,
corn, Hay, oats, and soybeans contributing 38%, 12%, 11%, 10%, and 10%
respectively to the total farm income Statewide. Ashland County
ranks 6th in the number of cattle and calves, 9th in dairy cows and 9th
in sheep numbers. Commercial grain storage in the county is 2.4
million bushels.
