Learning Community for CFAES

If you are majoring in agriculture, natural resources, or have an interest in veterinary medicine, consider living in Norton House with people who share your interests. You'll not only live among peers in these fields, but you'll also have close contact with the faculty and staff from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (FAES). These opportunities for direct contact with the experts will give you great information about courses, careers, and special programs and they'll help you make the choices that are right for you.

This living-learning program has an extensive history at Ohio State, and it is a warm, friendly community full of students committed to creating great memories. The core of this program lies in its integration of faculty contact, campus activities, and community organizations. Together, these resources interact to provide a comprehensive experience for the students involved.

An opportunity that is offered through the FAES Learning Program is “Norton in the Neotropics”, a study abroad experience designed specifically for students living in the Norton Residence Hall. Sustainable agriculture and community development will be intensively studied at Escuela Agricultura de Region Tropical Humeda (EARTH University) located in Guacimo, Limon near the Caribbean coast. Students will earn credit during both the seminar and the Costa Rican part of the experience. Group presentations will be incorporated in addition to guest experts commenting on “la forma de vida” (the way of life) in this not too-distant tropical, Latin American country. Immediately following Winter Quarter exams, the students will travel to Costa Rica for 10 days to experience field excursions across the Costa Rican landscape, examining mountain, plateau, volcanic, humid tropical, and coastal environments. Special scholarships are available to help offset travel costs.
