“Connectivity in Adams County”

The “Connectivity in Adams County” SOL project was developed to provide limited resource families and youth with technological education to aid in the development of more positive, competent, and community contributing citizens.

This project provides a variety of computer training to a diverse population who has a wide-range of computer needs. Needs include job readiness, skills to maintain employment, personal education, research to enhance quality of life, and the need to be connected to the world outside Adams County.

To meet the goals of the project, collaborations were established with Children First, Adams County Community Action, Southern State Community College, commissioners, and Ohio Valley Schools. Community-based sites are located at Tiffin Even Start, Department of Human Services, Senior Citizens Center, and Service Annex (Training Lab).

Program Outcomes:

  • Southern State Community College provided basic computer training classes to over 200 participants. Thirty-nine participants established e-mail accounts and 46 enrolled and completed advanced computer training classes.
  • Thirty-one participants in the Even Start and Able Programs completed at least 18 hours of instruction including Internet, keyboarding and Excel; 80% indicated a strong desire to enroll in more computer training classes.
  • Forty-five local teachers participated in a workshop on the use of the Ohio Career Information System (OCIS). As a result of the workshop, the OCIS software package has been integrated in the curriculum for juniors and seniors in the Ohio Valley High Schools.

Future Directions:

  • Move into a permanent lab and make the computer lab more accessible to the general public during the day and evenings hours.
  • Develop collaboration with the 4-H Council to better serve the 800 4-H members in Adams County.
  • Provide 36 weeks of instruction (6 hours per week) for the Even Start Program and the Connections class who are people seeking employment.
  • Provide weekly computer instruction for residents of Adams County to further goals to enhance quality of life through computer literacy.
