Enhancing
Community Resources: Teens and Computer Connectivity
“Enhancing
Community Resources: Teens and Computer Connectivity” YAR project is
designed to promote community-based partnerships
using local teens and computers as
resources for community development.
Through this project, the Extension 4-H program
assists local community partner organizations to enhance and make use of
the “assets” of teens, and to use the
potential of the world wide web to strengthen their
community development efforts within their neighborhoods. Teens are
involved in leadership development
sessions, service learning projects related to issues which
they identify in partnership with local adult youth developers and
educators, and in career development and
computer skills enhancement activities.
Community-based sites are located at
Hough, (Fatima & Lexington-Bell Centers, East High School), Cudell
(Cudell Improvement), and Glenville/Fairfax (Glenville Recreation
Center) neighborhoods of Cleveland and
Lakewood (West Shore Academy).
Program Outcomes:
- Fifty-three
teens engaged in 222 hours of service learning activities at local
schools, City Mission and conduct
presentations to the Cleveland City Council.
- Fifty-three
youth received training in use of computer technology in career
related activities, and 98 youth received
additional computer generated information on career
goals and academic skills.
- The project took
leadership in installation of a computer teaching lab at County
Extension Office and began forming collaboration with teen
newsletter and web site development
activities at several 4-H P.R.Y.M.E. project sites. Several teens
served as Ohio delegation to a 4-H national
computer technology conference in July.
Future Direction:
- Work with original
satellite locations to expand use of computer labs by teens
for academic skill building, web site development, and service
learning activities.
- Continue development
of youth leadership and service learning activities at East
High and FDR Middle School.
- Strengthen
collaboration with 4-H P.R.Y.M.E. sites to promote use of computers
for communication skills
development and career planning.
- Continue to work with
partner sites to assist youth in using computers for career
planning activities.
