OSU Extension SOL Project - Knox County

Making Better Choices

“Making Better Choices” YAR project developed a partnership between Rardin Ranch, OSU Extension 4-H Youth Development, and the Knox County Juvenile Courts where youth are given an opportunity to gather together for craft sessions, 4-H meetings, field trips, and other recreational activities. The Juvenile Court judge in Knox County feels that keeping at-risk youth involved in the community is important to their development.

Youth from area schools spend at least two hours per week for six weeks in group activities. Adults guide the youth through team-building activities and share ways to make better decisions in life. Community-based sites are located at Knox County 4-H Center and Rardin Ranch.

Program Outcomes:

  • Thirty-two youth have entered the program in 2000. 50% used the two computers to increase typing and word-processing skills.

  • Teens from the program have utilized the computers in creating a newsletter which is mailed to past and present members of the club.

  • Some of the youth have been able to work on school projects while in the group and even after spending their mandatory six weeks, have elected to remain with the program voluntarily.

Future Direction:

  • Incorporate a multimedia class to teach youth photography using a digital camera, photo imaging processing, and desk top publishing.
