2004 Awards

Delaware County 4-H Awards Ceremony - November 15th, 2004

Achievement Award winners received an Achievement pin and are listed first in each category.  Honorable Mention winners received a Certificate of Achievement and are listed alphabetically under each winner. Congratulations to all winners and nominees. Categories are listed in alphabetical order.

Achievement
*Heather Manring, of the Sunbury Halter & Saddle 4-H club, is a State 4-H Ambassador, a 4-H State Teen Council member, a Junior Fair Board member, 4-H Awareness Team member, captain of the Horse Bowl and coach for the junior team for Horse Hippology. Heather has volunteered over 300 hours working with third grade classes for her self determined Leadership project.

Aerospace
*Justin Baier is in the Won-by-One 4-H club. He won the National Qualifier for Aerospace at the Ohio State Fair where he received a clock trophy. He came in second place at the National Aerospace Qualifier at Purdue.  Justin was also on the first place Engineering Bowl Team to win at the National Qualifier.

Agriculture
*Mark Downerd is a member of Loin Hustlers 4-H Club. He showed eight milk cows at the Delaware County Fair.  Mark won Senior and Grand Champion Holstein, Champion and Reserve Brown Swiss Cows, Reserve Senior Champion Ayrshire, and Senior Division Dairy Skillathon.  He works 60-80 hours at his full time job milking and managing 200 cows. 

Beef
*Benjamin Wenner, of the Berlin 4-H'ers, fed and cared for five cattle.  He won first place, Reserve Division II Champion Steer, Reserve Senior Steer Showmanship, Reserve Senior Fitting and Grooming, and Senior Beef Skillathon Winner.

Citizenship & Community Service
*Nathaniel Cook is a member of the Homestead Guys & Gals.  He created and defined a paper route fund-raising event.  He looked into the needs and possibilities of the event including legal, food service, advertisement and sponsoring groups.  He received an outstanding on his project.

Clothing & Textiles
*Katherine Wenner, of Berlin 4-H'ers, took the projects It's Time for Clothing and Clothing for Middle School.  She learned many new techniques and redesigned parts of patterns.  Katherine researched and began a preemie sewing project for a community service. She received an Outstanding of the Day at the Ohio State Fair and Best of Class at the Delaware County Fair.

Communication Arts
*Daniel Zimmerman, of Radnor Pork Power, took Creative Writing as his 4-H project. He wrote two short stories, different types of poetry, and rewrote the lyrics to a song.  He received an outstanding and Best of Class at the Delaware County Fair.

Computer
*Jason Maxey, a member of Homegrown 4-Him, learned about motherboard types.  He built a fully functional home PC.  Jason is our co-advisor for our Tech Team.  I want to thank Jason for all of his help to make the computerization of the Delaware County Junior Fair possible.  He worked many long hours to accomplish this. Thank you Jason.

Conservation
*Abby Orsborn, of Powell Hearth & Shuttle, took tree planting as her 4-H project.  She planted and cared for 337 trees on their farm. Abby did soil tests, met with a forester, studied soil maps, fertilized, pruned, and checked for insects.  She also donated and planted a young tree as a thank you to the church where her 4-H group meets. She received an Outstanding of the Day at the Ohio State Fair.

Consumer Education
*Liza Blakeslee is a member of the Shooting Stars 4-H Club.  Her project in Money Fun-damentals earned her the consumer education award.  She received an A on her project and Outstanding of the Day at the Ohio State Fair.

Creative Arts
*Brooke Wanstrath took an A in the county with her creative arts project and it qualified her to go on to the Ohio State Fair where she also received an A.  She is a member of the Powell Hearth and Shuttle 4-H.

Dairy
*Mark Downerd, a member of the Loin Hustlers 4-H Club. He won Senior Showmanship in the Dairy Cattle Division at the Delaware County Fair; also, he showed 8 milk cows and won Champion Holstein, Champion Brown Swiss, Reserve Champion Brown Swiss and Ayrshire.  He received all A's and won the Sr. Division of the Dairy Skillathon.

*Whitney Prose, a member of the Elm Valley 4-H'ers, received A's in Team Class, and Open A with her dog, while receiving 1st in the Sr. Dog Skillathon class.  Whitney cared for and trained her dog to do long sits and stays - off the leash she taught her dog to retrieve and jump over a broad jump.  She participated in the Sr. Costume Class and placing 8th at the Ohio State Fair.

Family Life & Child Care
*Alezah Armbrust is a member of the Homegrown 4-Him 4-H Club.  She took the project, Growing with Others.  Alezah had two regular babysitting jobs.  She had an evaluation sheet for each child to complete and also for the parents.  She received an outstanding and best of class in the Senior Division with her child care project and received A's and outstanding in all of her child care projects (two scrapbooks, weaving toy and her poster).

*Atalie Bale, of Won by One, took Quick Breads as one of her 4-H projects. She made lots of breads for her family and for gifts. Atalie received Outstanding of the Day at the Ohio State Fair and also at the Delaware County Fair.

Gardening & Horticulture
*Whitney Prose, a member of Elm Valley 4-H'ers is one of our Junior Fair Board members, Camp Counselor in training, Cloverbud Camp Counselor and State 4-H Ambassador.  She grew thirty different vegetables in three gardens, raised fifteen different herbs, twenty different outdoor flowers, three planters, and ten indoor plants.  Whitney propagated thirty new plants.

Goats
*Christie Lucas is a member of Bit of Country4-H Club and Big Walnut FFA.  She is a member of the Big Walnut FFA Dairy Judging Team.   She cared and fed twenty-one goats and milked four of them. She bottle fed and weaned nine kid goats.  Christie won Showman of Showmen for goats and first place Intermediate Skillathon.

Health & Safety
*McKinley Roll is a member of the Hyatts Herdsmen. She gave a Safety Presentation at every 4-H meeting and gave out safety games, CD's, whistles, brochures and other items. She had a safety poster contest where helmets were the prizes. She also conducted a farm safety game.

Horse
* Katy Bender is a member of the JJ E-Z Riders 4-H club. She not only showed in 16 classes and versatility at the Delaware County Fair and placed in all but was involved with PAS Qualifiers, All American Youth Horse Show; State Horse Bowl and Hippology, and assisted at the State Youth Horse Clinic.

Leadership
*Ben Wenner of the Berlin 4-H'ers 4-H club has been involved in many activities. Among them are State 4-H Ambassador, Ohio Youth Expo, volunteered at the Ed Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament Fund-raiser for Ohio 4-H Center, attended Ohio Youth Summit, and assisted in judging different projects at the Ohio State Fair. A member of the Jr. Fair Board and 4-H Camp Counselor along with being the delegate to Advanced Conservation camp and the Ohio Youth Exposition he also served on the Ohio State 4-H Skillathon Team.

Mechanical and Engineering Sciences
*Timothy Ursich is a member of the Won by One 4-H club.  His project in Arcs and Sparks won him an A and Best of Class at the County Fair.  He was Delaware County's delegate for welding at the Ohio State Fair and received Outstanding of the Day; he participated in State Fair Judging, and the Delaware County 4-H judging.

Personal Development
*Heather Manring of the Sunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H club has been busy in many activities lending to her award in Personal Development. Volunteering over 300 hours working with 3rd graders in reading and writing - along with caring for 4 horses with physical needs, to representing Ohio at the National 4-H Congress; a facilitator at the State Horse Skill-a-Thon and being elected valedictorian in her Sr. Year of High School, are just a few of the activities she has gained much experience from.

Petroleum Power
*Dan Prose won the Petroleum Power award.  He is the member of the Elm Valley 4-H'ers.  Dan received an A and an outstanding in his self-determined mechanics project. He also received the Sr. Mechanics award

Photography
*Dan Prose is a member of the Elm Valley 4-H'ers 4-H club. Dan represented Delaware County at the State Fair in photography and received an A at the County Fair. Other interests include: Market Hogs, Gardening, Poultry and Engines.

*Christie Lucas, a member of the Bit of County 4-H Club has raised 25 meat broilers from chicks, cared for 4 fancy bantams in her project with the Delaware County Fair. She participated in the Intermediate Showmanship at the Delaware County Fair and came in 2nd with her Fancy Bantam, won A's with her Fancy Bantam Roosters and Bantam Hen.  She also won overall showman of showmen for the County Fair.

Dan Prose, Elm Valley 4-H'ers

Public Speaking
*Ben Wenner of the Berlin 4-H'ers 4-H club planned and prepared for a team demonstration on "Parasite Prevention" at the Delaware County Fair.  Ben was also trained as a State 4-H Ambassador in public speaking for State Fair to announce shows, introduce people and represent Ohio 4-H.  He also helped announce many shows at the Delaware County Fair.

Rabbits
Kayla Bell is a member of the Elm Valley 4-H'ers 4-H club. Among her many activities in 4-H with rabbit, she was involved with the State Fair Skillathon and came in 4th place. Received 1st place of breed at the state fair; and placed at the Delaware County fair in Showmanship, skillathon, and won best rabbit costume.

Sheep
*Atalie Bale, a member of the Won by One 4-H Club. Involved with the Pilot Sheep project through the Delaware County Fair - her awards included 1st place in the Lamb Skillathon (intermediate); 2nd place with the Lamb Lead In; 2nd place with the Carcass Judging Contest (intermediate) and Sheep Showmanship she received 5th place. She also participated in the Ohio State Fair receiving 5th place in the Junior Cheviot Sheep Show and gave a speech and power point presentation to the Ohio Cheviot Breeders Association.

Shooting Sports
*Chris Fellure is a member of the Country Clovers 4-H Club.  He received an A in his Gun Safety Project at the Delaware County Fair. He learned how to use a gun safely, maintaining the gun, cleaning and shooting it correctly, as well as knowing the parts of the gun, ammunition and different shooting positions.

Small Animals
*Marissa Lantz, a member of the Berlin 4-H'ers 4-H Club received best of Class with her Hamsters at the Delaware County Fair.  In her 4th year with the Small Animal Project, she cared for 6 hamsters; fed, cleaned and watered, and also cared for 2 litters of hamster pups.

Swine
*Travis Martindale is a member of the Hyatts Herdsmen 4-H Club.  He received many awards with his Swine project at the county fair; among them was an A in the Swine Skill-a-Thon; A in Market Hog Show for his Gilt; Grand Champion Middleweight Class Gilt and Reserve Grand Champion Gilt.

Veterinary Science
*Ben Wenner, a member of the Berlin 4-H'ers 4-H club, took a self determined project on Veterinary Science: Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) which he research all year long. He kept up to date on current BSE events and news releases.  Ben also shadowed veterinarian and observed declawing, spaying and x-rays.  He worked on "Parasite Prevention" team demonstration Ben cared and fed 8 beef cattle, over 80 rabbits, 5 cats, and 1 dog. 

Wildlife and Fishery
*Elissa Bale, a member of the Won by One 4-H Club is the winner of the Wildlife and Fishery award. She received an A and Outstanding at the Delaware County Fair with her project "Fishing for the Beginner".  She also received Jr. Reserve Conservation Award at the fair along with taking Market Hog, Growing with Others and Cats I.

*Atalie Bale won with her woodworking project "Nailing it Together". She received an A and outstanding at the Delaware County Fair and was Ohio State Fair Delegate.  She also received a participation ribbon at the Ohio State Fair.

Club Award
This Years Club award goes to Sunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H Club.  Their 4-H members volunteered over 300 hours of community service. They completed at least one service activity each month. Their service projects included food drive for P.I.N., pet supplies for HSDC, Teddy Bears for Delaware EMS, Children's books for shelter, trash pick up for "Keep Delaware County Beautiful" program volunteers for All Horse Parade, volunteers for Delaware 4-H Advisory Committee food trailer and Delaware County "Adopt A Garden" program. Many thanks Sunbury Halter and Saddle for all of your hard work.

Friend of 4-H Awards:

Wal-Mart has donated many items to help 4-H, such as a large basket of dog supplies for the 4-H Dog Committee to raffle, Beef Shower, trophies, lots of cookies for the Officers and Advisors conference and other events. They match funds for club fundraisers as well as donate to their employees' 4-H clubs.  

The Delaware County Agricultural Society has supported 4-H through the Delaware County Junior Fair including paying premiums, judges' fees, and ribbons. They have cooperated with committees to improve building facilities for better care of animals at the fair.  They are positive and supportive of the Delaware County 4-H program and hope for its continued success.

Susan Bargar Memorial Award:
Annie Lord is a member of JJ's EZ Riders 4-H Club. She is also a member of the Big Walnut FFA where she won an outstanding leadership award this year. She participated in the Big Walnut FFA Horse Judging Team where she received thirteenth in the state out of 347 individuals.   Annie worked at a horse stable where she fed the horses daily, cleaned stalls and gave medication to the horses.  Annie showed her horse every Friday night during the summer and also at the All American Youth Horse Show. 

Ashley Jr. Fair Awards:

Whitney Prose, a member of the Elm Valley 4-H'ers, has taken small animals, goats, cats, woodworking, vegetables, self-determined, food and nutrition, dogs, swine, poultry, creative writing, flowers, news reporting, leadership, and horseless horse for her 4-H projects.

Ryan King of Radnor Pork Power, has taken swine, creative arts, vegetables, woodworking, rocketry, and welding as his 4-H projects.

Cunningham Memorial Leadership Awards

Sara Hingsbergen is a member of the Condit Chatterbox 4-H Club.  She is a Junior Fair Board member - superintendent of Arts & Needlework and Related Home Ec., a Camp Counselor, a member of Teen Board, Cloverbud Camp Counselor, 4-H Advisory Committee Member, on the Awareness Team, Citizenship Washington Focus, and that was just in the year 2004. Along with 4-H, Sara is also an FCCLA Chapter Officer, in the Drama Club, Thespians, National Honor Society, Choir, Spanish Club, Spanish tutor, Spanish Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Josh Main is president of the Brown Bakers and Rakers 4-H Club.  He is our present Delaware County Junior Fair King.  He is a Camp Counselor, co-superintendent of the Beef Barn, has volunteered his time in many ways for 4-H such as helping with Quality Assurance. Along with all of his 4-H work, Josh is in the River Valley Viking Mentorship Program, German Club, Volunteer Initiative Program, and Laws of Life.  He is the treasurer for River Valley High School FFA. This year he earned the State FFA Degree.
