Does My Homeowner
Insurance Cover It?
March winds and April showers may bring flooding to many areas of Ohio.
Does the typical homeowner’s insurance policy cover flooding? NO.
Flood insurance is a federal government program but is marketed by private
insurance companies. Some damage or loss can be covered but some,
such as basement flooding, may not be. If you are in a flood-prone
area, it may be wise to talk to your insurance agent about your concerns
and needs. Your home will be covered 5 days after you buy the policy.
Buy BEFORE the rain (or snow melt) starts!!
If, however, a pipe bursts and water flows over your floors, you are
covered for accidental discharge of water from a plumbing system under
HO-3 homeowner coverage (check to see if you have it). To avoid unnecessary
damage and inconvenience, it’s wise to check plumbing and heating systems
at least every year. Also, become more knowledgeable about
homeowner’s insurance. The OHIO SHOPPER’S GUIDE TO HOME INSURANCE
can help. Call 1/800-66-526 for a free copy from the Ohio Department
of Insurance.
