All About the Master Gardener Program in Delaware County

The Delaware County Master Gardener program was started in the summer of 1994 by Rob Leeds, Delaware County Extension Agent, John Hixson, Union county Extension Agent and managed by Dusty Sonenberg, OSU Intern. The school was initially started as a combined school between Delaware and Union Counties and continues today.

Nancy Bendle joined Delaware/Union County Extension in 1995 to coordinate the program on a part time basis.  The school was held in July and August but was later changed to Mid March and April.  The school has always been held in the evening to accommodate working county residents.  There are only a few of the counties that hold school in the evening.

In 1997 the Master Gardeners voted to adopt a constitution and form  the Master Gardener Association.  The Association is governed by four officers, President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
All Counties participating in the Master Gardener program receive guidelines from the OSU State Master Gardener Advisor, which at present is Marianne Riofrio.  The guidelines help the counties in the State of Ohio maintain some constancy in the program; however procedure does vary from  county to county.

As of December 1998 there are 87 active Master Gardeners in Delaware County.  Various communities represented in he county are:  Delaware, Sunbury, Galena, Ostrander, Ashley, Radnor, Powell, Dublin and Westerville.  We also have some out-of -county participants from Franklin, marion and Knox counties.

OSU Extension/Delaware held their first Master Gardener Advisory Board meeting the summer of 1997.  There charge was to review the program and make suggestions.  Ideally the board will meet quarterly.  There was one meeting in 1997.  The goal for 1999 is to hold an Advisory Board meeting quarterly.

'The Master Gardener Advisory Board consists of twelve members.  Four Master Gardener Association officers and two appointed from the Master Gardener Association.  Six members will represent the Horticulture Industry.  The Ag. Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator are also members of the board.
