Responding to the Reality or Threat of Job Loss

Our economy is changing and many people have already experienced a loss of their job. As with any loss there is grief. Acknowledged grief can move you through it in a more positive manner and help prepare you for future interviews. Unattended grief can immobilize you emotionally and slow down progress in your job search. Seek to surround yourself with people who affirm you. While grieving, it is easy to identify with negative thinking and blame yourself for the situation. Take some time to process through the loss before going on interviews. If you ignore your grief, you may find that interviews lack enthusiasm and spontaneity. The grief may cover your true talents.

Looking for a job requires positive emotional strength. Take care of yourself. Reach out to family and friends. Refocus your values and redefine your goals. Most importantly, do not dwell on the things you cannot control but on those things you have control over and move you forward. Visualize success for yourself.

Because job loss is a financial issue, here are some tips to lessen the financial impact on your life:

  1. Review your financial situation and determine how you will distribute your finances so as to stretch them and not make unrealistic promises to creditors. 2. Notify creditors immediately of your situation and inform them regarding your plans to make payments.
  2. Sit down with household members and list expenses. Determine together which expenses can be eliminated, reduced or deferred. Make cuts that are going to give real mileage to your current cash reserves and income. 4. Budgets are guides that help you view the current situation. Continually revise your budget as things change. Control your spending accordingly.
  3. Use credit only for absolute necessities. Keep careful account of your credit.

As you are best able to meet the current demands on your money, you will have more energy for the job search. Success breeds success. Good luck!
