OSU Extension Restructuring Update

Video Communiqué Available Soon
A new issue of the Video Communiqué was taped today, and will be available for viewing early next week. The URL address for the online posting will be forwarded to all employees, and DVD copies will be available only by request.

This issue, presented by Keith Smith and Ken Martin, will provide updates on:

  • Budget - cost recovery; federal, state, county funding; and legislative activity
  • Restructuring - overview of current status; area leader update; and basic implementation plans to date
  • Programming - within the restructuring model; Real Money, Real World highlights; and Labs in Life at COSI
  • Upcoming Events - all-Extension annual conference (December 16-17); county visits; Linda Kutilek's retirement

Shared Services and Accountant Update
We have received several good questions and comments regarding the shared services model and the area accountant positions. After further dialogue with several individuals within the organization, we developed a shared services model document that we hope will help answer a lot of these questions and clarify how the shared services concept and the accountant positions will work within the organization. Not every question has probably been answered yet, but we are confident that these positions and shared services are moving us in the right direction in accordance with our strategic plan. The shared services model is available at http://extadmin-cms.ag.ohio-state.edu/restructuring-implementation/shared-services.

Online Directory Searches Updated
The online personnel directory has been enhanced to now sort personnel and county offices by area. This includes the county directors, all Extension educators, all program professionals, and county offices. The search link is available at http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~directory/SearchPers.php. The printable directories have also been updated.

Spotlight on...OSU Extension

Spotlight on ... is a new OSUToday feature created to promote the highlights, achievements and unique points of pride of each of the university’s departments, sections, units, etc. OSU Extension was featured in the May 13 issue.

OSU Extension is the original and most extensive outreach arm of the university. With offices run by faculty and staff in all 88 counties, Extension fulfills Ohio State's land-grant mission to address challenges of Ohioans via non-credit programs and research-based materials. We focus primarily on agriculture and natural resources, including environmental stewardship and gardening; family and consumer sciences, including nutrition, finances and human development; community and economic development, including business retention and expansion; and youth development and citizenship through Extension's 4-H program. Local efforts are supported by faculty with Extension appointments based in 13 departments in Columbus and at the OARDC in Wooster. Through OSU CARES, Extension expands its outreach by collaborating with more than 50 departments representing all colleges across campus.

Linda Kutilek Retires - Again

Linda Kutilek has worked as an assistant to the director since her retirement as Associate Director, Operations last October. She held a .4 FTE position to assist with operations oversight, as well as some organizational/unit support and resource development. She is also helping to finish the county visits this spring. As of May 31, Linda will retire completely from OSU Extension. Her interim and other duties will continue to be temporarily assigned to others. Thank you, Linda, for your commitment to OSU Extension, and best of luck in retirement!

Ohio 4-H Eligibility Policy Clarification

An ad hoc sub-committee of the 4-H Internal Advisory Committee considered the concerns and complaints regularly dealt with concerning the 4-H eligibility policy in regard to age/grade. The committee included Minnie Taylor, Janice Hanna, David Crawford, and Vicki Schwartz. Based on the Web-based survey results of Ohio 4-H professionals and 4-H Internal Advisory Committee discussion, the recommendation is to make no major change in the age and grade policy for Ohio 4-H membership. The only modification was to add more detail to the description of who constitutes a “trained adult.” See the following policy with the change highlighted.

The Ohio 4-H Eligibility Policy is:
Eligibility for Ohio 4-H membership begins when a child is age 5 and is enrolled in kindergarten as of January 1 of the current year (Cloverbuds). Membership to the Ohio 4 H club program begins when a child is at least age 8 and enrolled in 3rd grade as of January 1 of the current year. Ohio 4-H membership ends December 31 of the year in which an individual attains the age of 19. Membership begins when an eligible individual is enrolled in a club or group that is under the direction of a trained adult, who has completed the OSUE volunteer selection process, and within the scope of Ohio State University Extension. (Adopted by OSU Extension Administrative Cabinet - May 14, 2009)

All Extension: Show, Tell and Win

The Ohio Latino Work Force would like to invite everyone in Extension to submit work created specifically for the Latino/Hispanic communities in Ohio. Why should you do this?

  • Show - Proudly show the work you have created to help your Latino/Hispanic audience. Your work will be featured in the upcoming first issue of the Ohio Latino Work Force newsletter and future Web site.
  • Tell - Become a resource in Extension’s mission. The Ohio Latino Work Force is compiling information of the work developed for the Latino/Hispanic population by OSU Extension faculty and staff to create a list of people and materials available that caters to this growing community.
  • Win - Everyone who submits materials will enter a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant or store of their choice.

What kind of materials can you submit and in what format?
Materials - Anything and everything - newsletters, web sites, brochures, classes, programs, training, fact sheets, books, etc. All are welcome.
Formats - E-mail electronic documents and mail printed materials or CDs.

Where to send your materials? E-mailanders.40@cfaes.osu.edu

Mail to: Marusela Anders, Communications and Technology
216 Kottman Hall, 2021 Coffey Road, Columbus, OH 43210

What is the deadline? Please submit all your materials no later than June 15.

Write Winning Grants Seminar - June 6

There is still time to register for the "Write Winning Grants" seminar to be held on Saturday, June 6 at the Ohio 4-H Center (and a video conference in Wooster). This workshop is for you if you:

  • Have been wondering what’s involved in writing a successful proposal that will support or expand your Extension work.
  • Have been successful with small local funding and want to go for something bigger and more comprehensive.
  • Want to strengthen your current proposal writing skills.

The presenter, Dr. David Morrison, has conducted similar seminars at Ohio State and OARDC; and he not only gets high marks...he gets invited back! If there is any way you can make fit this seminar into your schedule, this is an opportunity to participate in high-quality relevant training at a fraction of the real cost (a workbook and lunch is included). Take a look at the attached flier and think about it. If you’re not sure if it will be worth your time, Jackie LaMuth (614-292-6470 or lamuth.1@osu.edu) would be happy to talk with you about it. To register, visit www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/grantsupport.

The "Write Winning Grants" workshop is a partnership between the College of Education and Human Ecology; the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences; the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center; and Ohio State University Extension. Target audiences - EHE, CFAES, OSUE and OARDC faculty, research staff, post docs, and Ph.D. candidates.

FAES Library Hours

The FAES Library, along with the other smaller library locations, has been asked to reduce hours in response to our student employee budget. Based on faculty and student feedback, and our own usage data, we settled on the following hours, which are effective this summer. We tried to be sensitive to the particular needs of Extension educators who travel from across the state and are often in Columbus outside of business hours for some evening library hours.

Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters
Monday-Wednesday: 8am-8pm
Thursday-Friday: 8am-5pm
Saturday: Closed
Sunday: 4pm-8pm
Holidays: Closed

Summer Quarter and Breaks
Monday-Friday: 8am-5pm
Saturday and Sunday: Closed

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or if there's anything I can do to improve the library's support of your work.

AgriPOWER Institute

The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) is seeking applicants for the second class of its AgriPOWER Institute. OFBF, Ohio's largest general farm organization, developed the year-long AgriPower program to focus on public policy issues confronting agriculture and the food industry. It will help individuals develop the skills necessary to become effective leaders and advocates for agriculture.

A total of 20 individuals will participate in several multi-day institutes throughout the year. Applications are due May 29. More information is included on the attached forms.

If you would like to help sponsor any part of the AgriPOWER Institute or know of possible partner organizations, those forms are attached as well.

Consideration of Semester Calendars

On March 12, the University Senate voted 91 to 19 to endorse three resolutions prescribing a University initiative to convert from a quarter-based calendar to a semester calendar. The resolutions were as follows:

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that The Ohio State University adopt a semester calendar with no fewer than 65 and, with the exception of professional colleges or academic disciplines whose accreditation standards require a longer term, no more than 70 days of instruction in each semester, to take effect no earlier than Autumn, 2012; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the axioms and recommendations presented in the final report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Semesters guide the process of implementing the semester conversion; and

NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council on Enrollment and Student Progress bring the precise 2012 academic calendar to the University Senate for review and approval.

The Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed these recommendations on April 3, 2009 in a resolution affirming that “The Ohio State University adopt a semester calendar to take effect no earlier than Autumn, 2012.”

The University Senate’s Council on Enrollment and Student Progress (CESP) has presented three possible semester calendars for consideration. Discussions of the options occurred at open forums sponsored by Faculty Council on May 12, May 15, and May 18. CESP will consider comments received by May 19 as it designs the 2012 academic calendar that will be presented for approval on May 28 to the University Senate. Suggestions could be provided in person at the forums or by e-mail to semesters@osu.edu. The calendar options are listed at: http://senate.osu.edu/CESPDraftCalendarOptions.pdf.

The full report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Semesters is available on the “special reports” link on the University Senate Web site or at this URL: http://senate.osu.edu/Senate%20Packets/Meeting%20Materials/march09/AdHocSemestersReport2009.pdf.

SR315 Construction Will Affect Travel to Campus

Three miles of State Route 315 will be under construction beginning June 15 from I-670 to the Ackerman Road exit. Crews will work on several bridges and the pavement to improve conditions for the 70,000 vehicles that use this gateway every day. Work on the northbound side of SR 315 will begin this summer, meaning both directions of traffic will use the southbound lanes to travel. There will be two lanes of traffic maintained in each direction during the construction period.

The ODOT Web site (http://www.dot.state.oh.us/projects/315/Pages/default.aspx) has an interactive map to provide directions to a dozen locations along SR315 during the construction period. There is also a map that lists the entrance and exit ramps that will be opened and closed during construction. Once construction begins, this Web site will be updated regularly until construction is complete. Traffic advisories will also be released to the media and others when work is scheduled that will impact travel.
