Greetings CD Colleagues: I hope everyone is having a great summer. This month is my one-year anniversary as CD Newsletter Editor. It is a real pleasure communicating with everyone. In this month’s issue, I want to highlight what a number of us are doing with education about the topic of global climate change. We also have a lot of other articles of interest, including an upcoming online seminar, opportunities for grants, a virtual Fellowship, the Ohio Land Use 2009 Conference in September, and an update from Sea Grant. We appreciate your input and hope you will continue to share your articles about your work for our future monthly newsletters.

The topic of global climate change continues to be the most widely discussed environmental topic in the world. A number of us in OSU Extension have been conducting education on this subject for many years, but it was in 2008 that we began to combine our efforts as a team. We have available various resources that should be of help to Extension Educators who would like to incorporate elements of this topic into their local programming.

Please go to the site and check it out. There are a number of slide shows that you can view. To see the slide shows, click on Resources, and then click on Primers on Climate Change. As an author of one of the slide shows, I am available to come and give that presentation to any group in the state. Feel free to contact me or other authors as well. If you would like, take 30 minutes out to listen to the radio interview I did with WOUB last year. You will find that next to my slide show, under Primers. It provides a summary of my slide show presentation.

Social media and emerging technologies are gaining increased attention for use in education. The list of tools grows daily. Examples include blogs, wikis, Ning, podcasts, Facebook, Twitter, Second Life, cloud computing, surface computing, mobile learning, and so on.
AACE (Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education) Global U is sponsoring a free monthly online seminar series on "Social Media: Trends and Implications for Learning.” The series will include monthly live interactive sessions in addition to discussions with guest speakers and participants. The impact of new technologies, research, and related projects will be explored as well as long term trends and patterns that are emerging, all from a perspective of social and networked learning theory. OSU Extension will host its annual OhioLand Use Conference2009 on September 16that the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center on OSU campus. Aimed at educating local decision makers, planners, resource professionals, educators and citizens, this year’s conference reflects the evolving issues affecting land use in Ohio today. Presentations by keynote speakers include:

OSUSea Grant Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling Program Wins Regional Award
Ohio State University Sea Grant’s Ohio Clean Marinas Program has received a Great Lakes Outreach Superior Programming Award from the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network for its Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling Program. The award recognizes a multi-program or single state multi-partner initiative that has helped solve a problem of major importance in the Great Lakes basin.
A partnership between Ohio Sea Grant, the Ohio Clean Marinas Program, the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Mondo Polymer Technologies, the Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling Program was developed to give marinas and boat owners a no cost alternative to disposing of discarded shrink wrap. Since its inception in 2006, the program has kept nearly 1 million pounds of shrink wrap plastic out of Lake Erie county landfills. This plastic is used to create guardrail spacer blocks.
Extension Educator Lucente Receives Regional Mid-Career Award
Joe Lucente, Ohio State University Sea Grant Extension Educator, has been honored with the 2009 Great Lakes Sea Grant Network (GLSGN) Mid-Career Award from the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network Program. He competed with Sea Grant Extension Agents from all seven other Great Lakes programs and was selected to receive the award through a competitive peer-reviewed application process that recognizes outstanding service to the GLSGN.
“It's an honor to be recognized for my accomplishments by my peers from throughout the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network,” Lucente stated.

Multi-State Rural Development Research or Extension Projects North Central Region
The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD) at Michigan State University announces a competition for seed grants aimed at enhancing the ability of Land Grant institutions to positively influence the quality of life in rural areas of the North Central region of the United States. Eligible applicants include current faculty and staff of Land Grant institutions in the North Central region and their partners. Proposals must involve participants from at least two states and two North Central Land Grant institutions. Proposals that bridge social and biophysical sciences are strongly encouraged. Proposals that engage both Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) personnel are also encouraged. Click on the link for more information: http://ncrcrd.org/
Fixed price grants may range from $1,000 to $20,000 each. Up to $144,000 will be awarded. Proposals are due at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, September 10, 2009.

Virtual Visiting Fellow - North Central Regional Center for Rural Development - 12 months
The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD) at Michigan State University announces a competition for a Virtual Visiting Fellow. The Virtual Fellow will lead an initiative for the NCRCRD. The NCRCRD works with Land Grant institutions to positively influence the quality of life in rural areas of the North Central region of the United States. The Center is creating this position to actively engage with the full range of partner institutions to deliver high quality, relevant and timely research outputs or extension models. Eligible applicants include current faculty and staff of Land Grant institutions in the North Central region who are recognized intellectual leaders in their sphere of activities.
