There are several professional development opportunities coming up that you may want to put on your calendar . . .
- Planning is underway for our multi-state community development study tour involving Extension staff from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. OSUE CD hosted the first study tour last fall. This fall, Penn State Cooperative Extension Community Development will host the study tour September 18-20, 2007.
The purpose of the tour is to meet and network with peers having similar program interests, explore opportunities to share resources, develop multi-state teams to address common needs, and discuss joint funding and grant opportunities. Consider joining the tour this year.
More information will be shared in future newsletters.
- A planning team is developing an agenda for the All-Extension CD conference, which is scheduled for September 25, 2007 in the Ag Auditorium. The theme will be related to the Foundations of Practice for community development and supported through the NC Regional Center for Rural Development.
Sessions will focus on facilitation, civic engagement / public participation, and participatory planning which comprise the second component of Foundations of Practice. Participants will be provided an overview of these components and will learn about how they can be useful across program areas.
Additonal sessions will provide opportunities to learn about current CD programming opportunities supported by educators and specialists.
- During the last week of June, a group of Korean Extension professionals will be visiting OSU for a short course on OSU Extension. This exchange program started last year, and OSUE CD contributed presentations on rural community economic development, land use and local government leadership. A similar program is being developed this year and the agenda will include visits to the Extension Centers at Wooster and Piketon.

After two years of work, Morrow County has a new Zoning Resolution. John Conglose, Extension Specialist, Economic Development and Land Use, worked with the Morrow County Zoning Commission, staff from the Morrow County Zoning Office, other Morrow County staff and the County Commissioners over a two-year time period. A series of 18 land use education programs were conducted in the county which culminated in a completely rewritten zoning resolution. Public hearings were held throughout the county over the past three months. The Morrow County Commissioners approved a final draft of the zoning resolution at a recent county commissioner’s meeting. If there is a need in a county, city, village, or township for a similar education program please contact John, OSU Extension Center at Wooster, 330-263-3799, conglose.1@osu.edu.

A team of ten AGNR and CD Specialists, Educators and Emeriti Faculty attended a study tour to California during the first week of May. The team met with faculty from UC Berkley, UC Davis and Humboldt State Universities to learn about current research being conducted on Community Street and Shade Tree programs throughout the world. The team also sat in on a lecture at the UC Berkley Campus provided by Joe R. McBride, Professor of Forest Ecology on the benefits of Community Street Tree programs. Meetings were also held with City of Sacramento officials and Sacramento Tree Foundation employees on work related to regional cooperation, funding of non-profits and citizen participation programs all related to shade tree planting programs and the greening of the Sacramento, California region. The study team will be meeting soon to determine what educational programs, curriculum and publications will be developed as a result of the study tour.

The Why Trees Matter: The Next S.T.E.P. Program is a program based out of the OSU Extension Center at Wooster that develops science-based educational resources to document and demonstrate the social, economic, and environmental benefits of urban and community forests. If anyone is interested in joining the group of specialists and educators working in this area, please contact co-leaders Jim Chatfield (chatfield.1@osu.edu) or John Conglose (conglose.1@osu.edu) at the Extension Center at Wooster (330-263-3799).

OSU's City and Regional Planning (CRP) program currently coordinates over 50 student interns in 30 different work environments throughout
central Ohio. The internships involve much more than simply 'city' and 'regional' planning. For example, current areas of focus include:
brown-field redevelopment, transportation, housing, energy policy, historic preservation, GIS, community development 'process', demographic
analysis, and grant writing.
How does it work? Internships typically begin in September and last one academic year (9 months), averaging 20 hours/week. However, shorter
internships can be arranged as determined by funding availability and/or need. In some cases, the internship can be extended to two years.
Employers pay the interns between $12.50 and $16/hour (roughly $9000 over the 9-month term of the typical internship).
Does it work for you? If you can provide the needed funding, the internship program can provide CRP students with real life Extension
experience and can augment Extension efforts where additional human resources and/or expertise is needed. Aletha Reshan (OSUE Holmes County
- reshan.1@osu.edu ) is a CRP graduate and can provide perspective as a former intern. For more information about the internship program,
