By now, hopefully you have seen the announcement made by Dr. Keith Smith regarding our appointment as Co-Leaders for the Extension CD program.
As we recently mentioned in a message shared with subscribers of the 'All-CD' list (all-comdev@ag.ohio-state.edu), while these assignments are in addition to our ‘regular’ job duties, we are eager to work with you in engaging with others in the pursuit of improved social, economic, civic, and environmental conditions in Ohio and beyond.
Building on the work started by Ken Martin, we hope to continue to support an organizational environment that fosters teamwork and promotes the fundamentals of community development work. Toward that end, there are several upcoming events planned in which we hope that you can participate. We would also like to know about programs that you have developed that can be shared with our colleagues and /or be observed at various venues.
We plan to continue to support the CD Program Update Meetings that have been held throughout the state. Last Friday, educators and specialists were hosted at such an update meeting by Mark Koenig, Extension Educator in Ottawa and Sandusky counties. There was great dialogue amongst the educators and specialists in attendance. Workforce training and leadership development seemed to be the pressing issues in the North Central part of the state. Along with an administrative update, Ken Martin was in attendance to provide an update on budget issues. On July 25, David Boulay and Julie Fox, Extension Specialists at the Piketon Centers will be hosting a similar Program Update Meeting. On August 10, David Civittolo will be hosting in Medina County. Ken Simeral will be hosting one of the Fall CD Program Update Meetings in Jefferson County on October 12. On November 6, Brian Raison will be hosting the second Fall meeting in Montgomery County. These meetings provide an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues, discuss issues, share and learn about programming opportunities and curriculum, and voice issues and concerns to your Co-Interim AD’s. We hope you can place the Program Update Meeting nearest you on your calendar.
Two other important programs currently scheduled are the All-Extension CD Event on September 25 to be held in the Ag Auditorium in Columbus and the Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Tri-State) Study Tour scheduled for September 18, 19, and 20. Both of these events will provide educational and teaching opportunities for participants. Preliminary information is provided below. Look for more detailed info to come. We are encouraging participation in these events!

The latest assessment of entrepreneurial activity by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation provides startling numbers for yet another year. The new report shows that an average of 465,000 people created new businesses each month in 2006, up slightly from 2005 and equal to the average rate for the past ten years. The Kauffman report also contains data on activity at the state level.
The Index is a key component and one of the 26 top indicators in the compilation of the Kauffman Foundation's highly recognized State New Economy Index. That report, released earlier this year, is a state-by-state analysis of how state economies are transforming from an old industrial economic model based on "smokestack chasing" to an increasingly global knowledge, and innovation-based new economy.
Both reports can be accessed through Kauffman’s web site under Resources at: http://www.kauffman.org/
