Hello Everyone,
We hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving! We also hope you will have a joyous holiday season as well! As the year is winding down, we want to provide several administrative updates in this issue of the CD Newsletter. We have traveled throughout the state over the past month visiting with and providing support to educators and specialists. We will continue to do this into the next year to provide mentoring, coaching and addressing critical issues. Please continue to keep us informed of opportunities to observe and share.
Fact Sheet Updates
We have recently been notified that a number of the CD Fact Sheets need to be reviewed and or updated. Under the new requirements for OSU Extension publication review process any publication over 4 years old shall be reviewed to determine if the information continues to be relevant. We are currently looking for reviewers and writers. If any one has interest in taking one or more of the CD program area fact sheets on to review or update please let us know. Proposals for new fact sheets are also welcome anytime. For the submission guidelines, go to:
http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~admin/handbook/pdf%20files/ReviewEducMaterial.pdf
Editing and writing OSU Extension Fact Sheets is a great opportunity to author scholarly peer reviewed work that can assist in the Annual Review and Promotion and Tenure process.
Educator Meetings
Over the past two years, educator meetings have been held throughout the state in various geographic locations. This has been an excellent opportunity for networking and information sharing along with discussing critical issues. We’d like to continue these opportunities in 2008 with one meeting held in the north central region, southeast region and west region along with a meeting in Columbus. If you would like to host one of these meetings, please contact Shirley Cook, cook.22@osu.edu or 614-292-6232. The Columbus meeting will be hosted by the State CD Office.
CD Educator Expectations
We were asked to attend several County Extension Director meetings over the past several months to provide updates on CD programming activities. One of the questions at these meetings was related to the Co-Interim AD’s expectations for CD educators. Our response in our opinion was very clear. At least until July 2008 we are going to be looking for the following out of CD Educators:
· Participation in the Community Development Annual Retreat on Jan. 30-31, 2008
· Participation in Communities of Practice Opportunies
· A Plan of Work based on a logic model format that includes Community Development programming opportunities and impacts on the local level.

One of the responsibilities that your co-interim directors are charged with is to represent OSU Extension CD in the North Central Region of Cooperative Extension. Leaders from the 12 state extension programs in this north central region, which includes Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa State. Kansas State, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois, along with OhioState, meet via conference call on a monthly basis and have several face-to-face meetings throughout the year.
An agenda item at the past several meetings was to address current funding scenarios related to the National Research Initiative.
The National Research Initiative (NRI) Competitive Grants Program for fiscal year (FY) 2008 supports (1) high priority fundamental and mission-linked research of importance in the biological, environmental, physical, and social sciences relevant to agriculture, food, and the environment and (2) competitively awarded research, extension, and education grants addressing key issues of national and regional importance to agriculture, forestry, and related topics. In FY 2008, the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) anticipates that approximately $181 million will be available for support of this program and that of this amount, no more than 22 percent will be made available to fund integrated projects. The remaining funds will be used to fund research projects.
There are a number of entities that are eligible to apply:
- 1862 Land-Grant Institutions
- 1890 Land-Grant Institutions
- 1994 Land-Grant Institutions

The North Central Leaders are currently looking for volunteers (educators or specialists) from each university extension system in the region to serve as potential reviewers for grant proposals. This is another outstanding opportunity for scholarly work which can impact the annual review process and promotion and tenuring opportunities. By serving in this capacity a reviewer can become more familiar with the grant application process which may help in obtaining grants from this source in the future.
