Headline: The headline is the title for each story. Keep it descriptive, yet short.

Date: Enter the date for which you would like the story to be published. This is the date that the story will both go live on the website and will be sent out via the automatic emailing system.

E-mail: Do you want this story to be sent out to those who are subscribed to the newsletter or to any of the theme areas below? If so, check yes. Otherwise the story will appear on the website but will not be sent via email.

Newsletter: This is the newsletter for your story. Not all stories have to be included in a newsletter. You only have access to post to newsletters to which you've been designated as a writer. You can be a writer for multiple newsletters, though any one story can only belong to a single newsletter.

Newsletter Order: This specifies the order in which stories are to appear within a newsletter. Stories are shown in increasing order starting at 1.

Extension Theme: If you want your story to be listed in any of the Extension Theme areas on the intranet site, check the corresponding box for that theme. The story will show up on searches for that theme, as well as on the front page of the site for that theme for a limited time. Please make sure that you are posting to the appropriate categories when selecting these theme areas. Authors that are found to post into categories that are not appropriate for the story repeatedly may have a peer review placed on their account. Stories would be posted to the newsletter then per normal, but would have to be authorized in order to be listed under a theme area.

Internet Topic: At a future point in time, any newsletter stories that are applicable to an outside audience may be displayed automatically on the State Extension website. To display these there, make sure you check one of these Internet Extension Topics. If you do not wish your story to be posted outside of the Intranet, leave these boxes unchecked.

Additional Keywords: Keywords help the search engine find a particular story. It is encouraged that with every story you include at least 3 keywords or phrases, separated by commas. To help you think of what these keywords should be, ask yourself what you would search for in order to find this story. It is usually better to have a few to many keywords than to not have enough.

Intro: The intro is the lead in for your story. This is displayed on the archive page if the long format is used, giving a short description of what the user will find in that story. It is also used for people subscribing to email digests and the newsfeeds. The intro should be placed at the beginning of the content section in addition to listed here.

Content: The content of the story is exactly that, the main content of the story. The graphical editor provides you with an easy way to format your text as well as include lists, tables and images (in .gif or .jpg format) with your stories. To find out what each button does, simply hover the mouse over the button and the button's name should appear. In short though, all the controls for tables and images are on the left toolbar, and all text formatting is on top.

If you want to have even greater control over how your text is formatted and are familiar with html, you can select the Html button at the lower right corner of the editor to view and edit the html code directly.

Sources: Stories may have sources associated with where the information came from. This is not needed, though may be added information for some stories. If you wish to include additional contact information, add someone as a source.

Files: Files are for uploading attachments that you want included with your story. These could be (but are not limited to): .pdf, .mp3, .doc, .ppt, etc. Any images we wish to include in our file should be uploaded using the graphical editor in the content section of this form.

Hi Everyone,

Labor Day weekend. . . .  where did the summer go!?

Hopefully you can look back on your summer with fond memories filled with significant work and home accomplishments.  As we march into autumn we look forward to many events like college football (Go Bucks!), Galaxy, family celebrations, signature programs . . . and the HOLIDAYS!  We then will reflect again, “Where did the autumn go!”   The message is . . .  life whirls by so we must not pass up opportunities afforded to us at the moment.  Spontaneity can lead to excitement, fun and adventure whether at work or at home.  Let’s take time to enjoy “the moment”.

Have a great long weekend  . . .  and grasp a new adventure!  Your FCS Extension efforts are truly appreciated . . . thank you.

Best wishes,

Jill

Award Nominations Reminder – Spiegel, King, ESP, & Excellence in Extension

This is a busy time of the year for preparing award nominations, both for yourself and for your colleagues. . .

·       The Marilyn R. Spiegel Excellence in Family and Consumer Sciences Award recognizes successful implementation of ideas and the results of innovative approaches in Extension FCS programming.  Consider who you or your team might nominate, and begin to work now on putting the application together.  Keep your efforts secret as we like to surprise the recipient at Annual Conference. The submission deadline is November 1st. You can find the nomination form at http://fcs.osu.edu/prof-resourses/files/spiegelaward.doc.

·       The Mary E. King Memorial Professional Development Award provides up to $500 to an FCS Extension professional to support professional development activities.  You can apply yourself, or nominate a colleague.  You can find the application form at http://fcs.osu.edu/prof-resourses/files/kingaward.doc.  The submission deadline is November 1st.

·       ESP Team Teaching Awards, Tools for Teaching Awards, and ESP Special Chapter Awards applications are due October 1st.   Complete descriptions and applications can be found at the Ohio Alpha Eta Chapter of ESP website ( http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~esp/). You all do excellent work, so take the time to complete the nomination forms and submit them for your work!

·       Excellence in Extension Award nominations will be open through September 20.  Please submit nominations to Vicki Schwartz schwartz.4@osu.edu or to the South East Regional Office. This annual award, sponsored by Epsilon Sigma Phi and OSU Extension, recognizes a superior Extension professional with a cash award of $1,000, plus the addition of $1,000 to the base salary.  Nominations can be submitted by faculty, staff, clientele, or emeriti.  Any Extension employee who is a current member of Epsilon Sigma Phi is eligible for this award. The nomination form can be found at http://ohioesp.osu.edu/forms/forms.htm,  click on Excellence in Extension Award.

Scholarly Journal Options for FCS Extension

In the August NEAFCS electronic newsletter a notice shared that the Member Services Committee has compiled a list of 20 scholarly journals that would be possible outlets for FCS Extension papers.  If you are a NEAFCS member, you’ll find the list on the Members Only section of the NEAFCS website site (just one of a number of good reasons to join NEAFCS).  This is a good resource to have as you think about papers that you will be writing and submitting to scholarly journals for publication in the future.  Recall that one of our Strategic Plan goals is to have 40% of faculty publish at least one paper in a scholarly journal each year.

AAFCS Annual Conference Call for Proposals

It is proposal time for next year’s AAFCS 100th Annual Conference.  Proposals must be submitted via the online proposal submission system. The submission system will be open from September 16, 2008, until midnight (11:59 pm Eastern Time) October 14, 2008. Read the complete details at: http://www.aafcs.org/meetings/09/index.html.

OSU Kirwan Institute Convening

Subprime lending, surging foreclosures and instability in the housing market threaten to severely widen racial disparities and damage the entire US economy.  The Kirwan Institute has launched an outreach, advocacy and research initiative to focus on the subprime lending and foreclosure crisis from a structural perspective. As part of this effort, the Kirwan Institute is holding a convening of advocates, researchers, policy makers, funders and other key stakeholders to explore the racial dimensions of the crisis and identify the critical solutions needed to address this significant civil rights challenge.  The goal of the convening is to identify solutions from leading thinkers and key stakeholders in the various domains impacted or implicated by the crisis.  The “National Convening on subprime lending, foreclosure and race” will take place October 2nd - 3rd, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency, in Columbus.  To read more, including how to RSVP, go to http://www.kirwaninstitute.org/research/subprime-lending-foreclosure-and-race-initiative.php.  RSVP ASAP as space is limited.
