Headline: The headline is the title for each story. Keep it descriptive, yet short.

Date: Enter the date for which you would like the story to be published. This is the date that the story will both go live on the website and will be sent out via the automatic emailing system.

E-mail: Do you want this story to be sent out to those who are subscribed to the newsletter or to any of the theme areas below? If so, check yes. Otherwise the story will appear on the website but will not be sent via email.

Newsletter: This is the newsletter for your story. Not all stories have to be included in a newsletter. You only have access to post to newsletters to which you've been designated as a writer. You can be a writer for multiple newsletters, though any one story can only belong to a single newsletter.

Newsletter Order: This specifies the order in which stories are to appear within a newsletter. Stories are shown in increasing order starting at 1.

Extension Theme: If you want your story to be listed in any of the Extension Theme areas on the intranet site, check the corresponding box for that theme. The story will show up on searches for that theme, as well as on the front page of the site for that theme for a limited time. Please make sure that you are posting to the appropriate categories when selecting these theme areas. Authors that are found to post into categories that are not appropriate for the story repeatedly may have a peer review placed on their account. Stories would be posted to the newsletter then per normal, but would have to be authorized in order to be listed under a theme area.

Internet Topic: At a future point in time, any newsletter stories that are applicable to an outside audience may be displayed automatically on the State Extension website. To display these there, make sure you check one of these Internet Extension Topics. If you do not wish your story to be posted outside of the Intranet, leave these boxes unchecked.

Additional Keywords: Keywords help the search engine find a particular story. It is encouraged that with every story you include at least 3 keywords or phrases, separated by commas. To help you think of what these keywords should be, ask yourself what you would search for in order to find this story. It is usually better to have a few to many keywords than to not have enough.

Intro: The intro is the lead in for your story. This is displayed on the archive page if the long format is used, giving a short description of what the user will find in that story. It is also used for people subscribing to email digests and the newsfeeds. The intro should be placed at the beginning of the content section in addition to listed here.

Content: The content of the story is exactly that, the main content of the story. The graphical editor provides you with an easy way to format your text as well as include lists, tables and images (in .gif or .jpg format) with your stories. To find out what each button does, simply hover the mouse over the button and the button's name should appear. In short though, all the controls for tables and images are on the left toolbar, and all text formatting is on top.

If you want to have even greater control over how your text is formatted and are familiar with html, you can select the Html button at the lower right corner of the editor to view and edit the html code directly.

Sources: Stories may have sources associated with where the information came from. This is not needed, though may be added information for some stories. If you wish to include additional contact information, add someone as a source.

Files: Files are for uploading attachments that you want included with your story. These could be (but are not limited to): .pdf, .mp3, .doc, .ppt, etc. Any images we wish to include in our file should be uploaded using the graphical editor in the content section of this form.

FCS e-Connection - March 2009

Hi Everyone,

March can bring lots of different weather our way but it is also a month that we can confidently say, “spring is only a few weeks away”!  I am ready, aren’t you!  Spring means a “new beginning” both for nature and for OSUE.

This week Keith will be introducing the new structure we will begin to embrace and live by.  It was budget driven but regardless the cause, it is an organizational change that will be challenging and exciting.  It will encourage more camaraderie and partnerships among our peers from all program areas.  It will promote cross-county programming . . .  and it will allow us to be innovative in the way we serve our clientele.  Some of our peers will have bigger changes in their lives than others . . .  and it will be important to support everyone as we move forward.  We still remain a “helping organization” and in days to come we will need to focus on helping within so that we can move forward in a positive way.

Best wishes,
Jill

FCS RESOURCES FOR STATEWIDE DISTRIBUTION

Have you been thinking about developing educational materials for statewide distribution?  Then start writingand submit your resource for blind peer review! Go tohttp://fcs.osu.edu/prof-resourses/files/ExtPeerRevGuide.pdf  to download and complete the submission form.  Email the form and your materials to be reviewed to Jill Eversole Nolan jnolan@ehe.osu.edu (or US Mail if the files/materials are too large to email).  They will be forwarded to Donna Brown, who gives leadership to the process.  We strive to have the review process completed in 6-8 weeks.  Don't miss out on taking advantage of this opportunity!  Build our blind peer reviewed educational materials base...build your vita!   If you have questions about the process, contact Donnaat 614-292-0529 or brown.36@osu.edu.

FCS LINK TO WHY TREES MATTER

An article written by J. Bell, J Wilson and G Liu, Neighborhood Greenness and 2-Year Changes in Body Mass Index of Children and Youth, reinforces the case for our multi-disciplinary approach to Signature Programming.  Their conclusions:
Greenness may present a target for environmental approaches to preventing child obesity.  Children and youth living in greener neighborhoods had lower BMI z-scores at Time 2, presumably due to increased physical activity or time spent outdoors. Conceptualizations of walkability from adult studies, based solely on residential density, may not be relevant to children and youth in urban environments.
(American Journal Preventive Medicine, 2008, 35(6): 547"553)

PRESCHOOL VISION SCREENING IS EXPANDING

Some additional external funding is allowing us to expand the University/Community Model Preschool Vision Screening to 7 new counties in 2009. This effort continues the College of Optometry and OSU Extension partnership begun in 2007 and involves Family Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development.  Phase 1 participants, Nancy Stehulak, Henry Co., Pam Leong, Shelby Co., and Jackie Krieger, Summit Co. will be trained as “Certified Preschool Vision Screening Trainers” by College of Optometry Staff and in return, they will train an additional 7 county educators, adult volunteers and 4-H teens on how to implement the model vision screening program. The new counties are: Cuyahoga, Darke, Hancock, Logan, Mercer, Portage, and Trumbull.

2008 FCS COST RECOVERY CONTRIBUTIONS

Appreciation is extended to the following counties participating in FCS Cost Recovery efforts in 2008: Allen, Ashland, Auglaize, Butler, Clark, Defiance, Erie, Fairfield, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Henry, Highland, Holmes, Jefferson, Licking, Logan, Lorain, Miami, Montgomery, Ottawa, Richland, Sandusky, Shelby, and Wood.  These Cost Recovery dollars generate additional support of existing programs and new initiatives.  Cost Recovery Funds have supported the Food Preservation In-service; offset registration fees for professional development; funded the Master Money Mentor CDs for each county, and cost-shared printing fees with the 5countysolutions group.  Tracking and transmittal forms are at:http://extension.osu.edu/cost/index.html.  To request FCS Cost Recovery funds to support an innovative idea or project, send Jill, nolan.2@osu.edu, a brief email that succinctly outlines your idea/project and the amount of your request.
