FCS Update
May 1, 2009

Source: Jill Eversole Nolan, OSU Extension, Family & Consumer Sciences nolan.2@osu.edu 614-688-5378 Hi Everyone,
At last “May” . . . which means we most likely have snow/cold temperatures behind us and only sunshine/HEAT ahead of us! It is a great time of year with lots of family picnics, yard maintenance and work events to keep us all more-than-busy.
The EFNEP professionals will be in Columbus next week networking and gleaning new information. It is always a wonderful time to catch up on EFNEP activities and people’s lives. Several of our EFNEP staff will be receiving special awards and recognition.
If you are a mother, Happy Mother’s Day . . . moms are special people who greatly impact the lives of their children. Hopefully your family is close by to surround you with love! Both of our children are far away (United Kingdom and Indonesia) but I will certainly feel their love as I know they will feel mine. Enjoy your special day!
Thank you all for the heartfelt support the past few months. I, the organization and your peers greatly appreciate it. We have much to be thankful . . . and will begin to embrace some new beginnings!
Best wishes,
Jill

On May 11 from 8:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., FCS Educators and Specialists, EERA Leaders, Regional Directors and state-based staff will gather in the Ag Admin Auditorium to begin defining new ways of delivering programming in the EERA model. There will be opportunity for individual EERAs to identify needs and educator expertise, explore ways to cover FNP and EFNEP requirements/obligations, discuss ways of working effectively in our new structure, and brainstorm about programming efforts. This is an important planning day you will not want to miss! Registration was sent last week via email; there is no registration fee but we do need a count.

Human Development and Family Science Extension has begun a new quarterly newsletter, Youth and Family Focus, which will highlight work in youth and families. The first edition, Spring 2009, focuses on the work of Deanna Wilkinson and the perspectives of those involved in violence, an article about tweens (8- to 12-year-olds), an Applied Research Review column on bullying, and a look at the American Community Survey from the U.S. Census. Kara Newby and Tasha Snyder are writing and editing the new effort.

If you haven't visited the National Center for Home Food Preservation website lately, you might not know that the 2006 USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning has finally been posted in PDF format. There are lots of clients who will want this updated version, Kate Shumaker, Holmes County, is planning to do a mass printing of the 2006 edition. Format will stay the same - cover page in full color, all other pages black ink, each chapter on different colored paper, 3-hole punched, and cellophane wrapped. Cost obviously decreases as the volume printed increases. If you would be interested in purchasing some (or many) Canning Guides, please send Kate an estimate of how many you would like at shumaker.68@osu.edu.

Today, there is growing competition for available funds and growing demand to account for the responsible use of public dollars. As stewards of Extension’s dollars, it is increasingly important to be able to document the work being done by faculty with Extension appointments to be able to share that information with our key stakeholders. By using Extension orgs when Extension faculty work on Extension types of externally funded projects, we can capture much of that work. When an Extension professional develops and works on an externally funded Extension project, an appropriate portion of the intellectual effort and ownership (that’s the Proposal/Award Allocation column on the PA005 form) for that project should go to his or her department’s Extension org. When someone is released to work on an externally funded project there is an expectation that the project is Extension work. There is also an expectation that the professional’s on-going Extension responsibilities will continue with support from the release dollars. Release time from an Extension appointment is returned only to an Extension org - hopefully to support Extension programming. (Source: Jackie LaMuth)
Department of Extension policy is that Extension orgs receive 60% of release time earned for projects after 7/1/08. (Source: Brian McClain)

Dr. Gail Kaye is leading a team from OSU, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and AVI to investigate the impact of using Snackwise® (a validated computer software program that categorizes food products into 3 categories: green-“best choice”, yellow-“choose occasionally”, or red-“choose rarely) on nutrient consumption of patrons and sales of vended items on the OSU main campus. The use of Snackwise® was included as a bid specification for the vending contract at the Ohio State University that went into effect September, 2008. Results of the research will be used to help shape environment and policy changes aimed at improving the dietary behaviors of the campus community.

Change isn’t something that happens here and there. No matter where you go, there it is - and no wonder. Life is a complex interaction of millions of factors, all connected to each other. If any one thing changes, so do all the interactions, sometimes in imperceptible ways.
You live in a world where everything is changing. It’s not that change stalks you. Instead, since change is everywhere, it is already where you are heading (Yaverbaum & Sherman, 2008, p. 194-195).
