FCS Update
July 2, 2009

Source: Jill Eversole Nolan, OSU Extension, Family & Consumer Sciences nolan.2@osu.edu 614-688-5378 Hi Everyone,
The 4th of July already . . . the summer is progressing too fast! My husband, Mike, and I just returned from visiting our daughter who lives in Indonesia. We traveled through Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore and experimented with some activities that were out-of-our-comfort zone and first time experiences. We rode elephants through the jungle; enrolled in an all-day Thai cooking class (preparing, cooking and eating ON THE FLOOR); had our first pedicure/foot massage; ate things that we were too afraid to ask whether it was plant or animal; and walked endlessly through the neighborhoods and community markets. The experiences re-confirmed the meaning of global diversity. We so often think that the American-Way is the best . . . but the international perspective proves quite the opposite and emotionally powerful. Whether traveling in the states or abroad, it is valuable to learn and live the different cultures. It helps us embrace diversity.
Hope your summer is going well and you will spend some time away from work to relax and play . . . it is a healthy way to rejuvenate!
Best wishes and thank you for all you do for OSU Extension . . . you are truly valued! Have a great 4th . . . Happy Birthday America!
Jill

This year the Family and Consumer Sciences' (FCS) profession is celebrating its 100th Birthday. During this year's Ohio State Fair there will be a Family and Consumer Sciences Day on August 8th from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Throughout the day, a FCS Celebration message will be given on the Ohio State Fair Address System.
Come and be part of this grand celebration! FCS OSU Extension co-workers are welcomed to be involved. Let Susan Shockey, know if you would like to participate. Her contact information is shockey.3@osu.edu or phone 614-866-6900 (ext. 206). She needs to submit names of FCS State Fair volunteers by July 20th.
FCS Day at the Ohio State Fair is made possible by the Ohio Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (OAFCS). Earlier this year Ohio Governor Strickland signed a proclamation recognizing Family and Consumer Sciences in Ohio. This document can be found in the March 2009 OAFCS Newsletter posted at http://www.oafcs.org/.

EFNEP Program Assistants, FNP Program Assistants, and EFNEP Supervising Educators/Program Specialists are grant funded. The funding is for very specific programming with very specific audiences. The program and fiscal integrity of the projects will be compromised and the future funding jeopardized if they are actively involved in delivery of signature programs -- programs that are not within the scope of work funded by the respective grant. The EFNEP Program Assistants, FNP Program Assistants, and EFNEP Supervising Educators/Program Specialists may be able to provide insight into signature program delivery or may be able to help promote upcoming signature programs through their agency/clientele contacts. They cannot participate in direct program delivery of a signature program. (Source: Joyce McDowell)

What: A curriculum development “how-to” in-service for OSU Extension Educators from all program areas delivered via blended e-learning
Why: To improve knowledge and skills in creating effective OSU Extension curricula (as outlined in our strategic plan)
As we move toward greater content-area specialization, increased understanding of instructional design and curriculum development methodologies will result in higher-quality leaning engagements with our clientele and greater overall program impact.
When: This fall - September 21 to October 9, 2009 (hold October 9 for an in-service)
A self-paced pre-training will be available via Moodle (the “e” part), from September 21 to October 5, followed by an in person session on October 9 at the NOFB 4-H Center, from 9:30 am - 4 pm. More details and registration information will be forthcoming. Class size will be limited to 35; book time on your calendars now.
FMI: Contact Kirk Bloir @ 614.247.6524 | bloir.1@osu.edu or Donna Brown @ 614.292.0529 | brown.36@osu.edu

Joyce Smith, former Clothing and Textiles State Specialist, has a “Managing Incontinence” teaching kit that she would like to offer to anyone willing to pick it up from campus. If you conduct programming with the elderly and could use the materials, email Kirk (bloir.1@osu.edu). The kit will go to the first emailer. The kit includes a power point presentation on color transparencies, teaching outline/notebook, reference materials and sample of incontinence products and garments; it is several years old.
