Headline: The headline is the title for each story. Keep it descriptive, yet short.

Date: Enter the date for which you would like the story to be published. This is the date that the story will both go live on the website and will be sent out via the automatic emailing system.

E-mail: Do you want this story to be sent out to those who are subscribed to the newsletter or to any of the theme areas below? If so, check yes. Otherwise the story will appear on the website but will not be sent via email.

Newsletter: This is the newsletter for your story. Not all stories have to be included in a newsletter. You only have access to post to newsletters to which you've been designated as a writer. You can be a writer for multiple newsletters, though any one story can only belong to a single newsletter.

Newsletter Order: This specifies the order in which stories are to appear within a newsletter. Stories are shown in increasing order starting at 1.

Extension Theme: If you want your story to be listed in any of the Extension Theme areas on the intranet site, check the corresponding box for that theme. The story will show up on searches for that theme, as well as on the front page of the site for that theme for a limited time. Please make sure that you are posting to the appropriate categories when selecting these theme areas. Authors that are found to post into categories that are not appropriate for the story repeatedly may have a peer review placed on their account. Stories would be posted to the newsletter then per normal, but would have to be authorized in order to be listed under a theme area.

Internet Topic: At a future point in time, any newsletter stories that are applicable to an outside audience may be displayed automatically on the State Extension website. To display these there, make sure you check one of these Internet Extension Topics. If you do not wish your story to be posted outside of the Intranet, leave these boxes unchecked.

Additional Keywords: Keywords help the search engine find a particular story. It is encouraged that with every story you include at least 3 keywords or phrases, separated by commas. To help you think of what these keywords should be, ask yourself what you would search for in order to find this story. It is usually better to have a few to many keywords than to not have enough.

Intro: The intro is the lead in for your story. This is displayed on the archive page if the long format is used, giving a short description of what the user will find in that story. It is also used for people subscribing to email digests and the newsfeeds. The intro should be placed at the beginning of the content section in addition to listed here.

Content: The content of the story is exactly that, the main content of the story. The graphical editor provides you with an easy way to format your text as well as include lists, tables and images (in .gif or .jpg format) with your stories. To find out what each button does, simply hover the mouse over the button and the button's name should appear. In short though, all the controls for tables and images are on the left toolbar, and all text formatting is on top.

If you want to have even greater control over how your text is formatted and are familiar with html, you can select the Html button at the lower right corner of the editor to view and edit the html code directly.

Sources: Stories may have sources associated with where the information came from. This is not needed, though may be added information for some stories. If you wish to include additional contact information, add someone as a source.

Files: Files are for uploading attachments that you want included with your story. These could be (but are not limited to): .pdf, .mp3, .doc, .ppt, etc. Any images we wish to include in our file should be uploaded using the graphical editor in the content section of this form.

Hi Everyone,

It has been a great summer thus far . . .  how about for you? 

I have enjoyed some relaxing vacation, tackled some long-awaited home projects, and dove into some fun projects at work.  Most recently, I tackled reading ALL of your URSs, over 80 of them!  I learned a great deal about the programming across the state.  Your URS is used often to secure information about Extension programming, audiences reached and impacts accomplished.   Please do not under-estimate your Extension efforts in your URS.  Congrats to all of you for a successful programming year!

Per usual it has been a “fair” summer!  Fairs are wonderful environments for learning  . . .  and great places for advocating our Extension mission.  I have browsed the exhibits at the Ohio State Fair and impressed with the quality of projects and the magnitude of support from all of you, your volunteers and 4-H members.  A huge THANK YOU to all.

Summer is flying by . . .  take time to enjoy it with your family and friends!

ANNUAL CONFERENCE RFP

All OSU Extension professionals are encouraged to attend Annual Conference this year.  It will be December 16-17 in Columbus.  This year’s conference theme is “A New EERA in Extension.”  You are encouraged to submit a proposal for a seminar, poster session, or display booth.  You can find the call for proposals on our FCS website.  It will be on the OAEP website (http://oeaa.osu.edu/index.htm) in the near future.  Contact Kara Newby, knewby@ehe.osu.edu, with questions.


EXCELLENCE IN EXTENSION AWARD

This annual award, sponsored by Epsilon Sigma Phi and OSU Extension, recognizes a superior Extension educator with a cash award of $1,000, plus the addition of $1,000 to the base salary.  Any Extension employee who is a current member of Epsilon Sigma Phi is eligible.  Go to http://ohioesp.osu.edu/forms/forms.htm for the nomination process details.


NEW EXTENSION COP: FAMILIES, FOOD, & FITNESS (FFF)

The Families, Food, and Fitness Community of Practice launches this month on eXtension:   http://www.extension.org/families_food_fitness.  This virtual educational environment is targeted to families with young children.  It introduces interactive features, such as a recipe database, fast food menu helper, and a spice-food pairing suggestions.  If you’ve not already, check it out!  It is a great interactive learning resource to help you help families make informed decisions about healthy eating and physical activity.


MITTNET LAUNCHED

The Managing in Tough Times resource directory, MiTTNet, officially launched this month.  The directory can be accessed at:  http://mittnet.extension.org/.  Over 900 resources can be found in individual and family, farm and ranch, community, and youth topic areas.  You can view a web seminar that demonstrates the site and highlights its contents at: http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/p78987985/.


OSUE RESTRUCTURING - WORKING ACROSS PROGRAM AREAS

As mentioned in the Video Communiqué, it is not the intent of the restructuring model to have people work in one program area only.  All educators must work in cross-program areas as appropriate - especially in this time of restructuring and transition.  Educators may be assigned to one program area as a priority/specialization, but you have always been asked to cross-programmatically and share expertise as necessary.  Your positive attitude about the restructuring process has been helpful as we work through the details of this new mode of operation. CROSS-PROGRAMMING OPPORTUNITY!

A good example for cross-programming is . . . . Annie's Project.  It covers topics taught by both ANR educators and FCS educators.  This is a great program for women in agriculture, as it touches on a variety of farm and family management topics.  Doris Herringshaw and Julia Woodruff, Erie Basin EERA and leaders of Annie’s Project, are targeting each EERA.  They have developed a step-by-step guide to planning and hosting a workshop and can offer some funding support to purchase the Annie’s Notebooks and the Real Colors Cards. 

In a memo to ANR educators this week, Assistant Director Don Breece said,  “I have participated in several workshops and found each one to be FULL of enthusiastic women, eager to learn about the agriculture/horticulture industry and increase their productive involvement within the family business. On-the-job photos are needed for the OAEP display board at the August County Commissioners Days. NEW FCS BLOG!

Check out our new Ohio State Extension FCS blog, named "Eat, Save, and Be Happy.”  You will find it at http://osufcs.wordpress.com/.  Kara Newby (HDFS), Julie Shertzer (HN), Linnette Goard (Western Reserve), Melinda Hill (Crossroads), Cora French-Robinson (Heart of Ohio), and Sharon Seiling (CS) are the current bloggers.  Let Kara or Julie know if you have topics you’d like to see addressed.


FALL DIALOGUE PLANS

The ADs are working with RDs and EERA Leaders to see if we can coordinate meeting schedules for this fall.  We’re still working on the details, so stay tuned for dates for our Fall Dialogues.  I value these opportunities for us to meet and discuss FCS programming efforts.


UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Pat Holmes, Miami Valley EERA, will continue her state Universal Design assignment.  One of her major responsibilities is to coordinate staffing and provide oversight for the educational Universal Design exhibit at the Farm Science Review, September 22-24.  If you would like to volunteer your time and services to help staff the exhibit, contact Pat at holmes.86@osu.edu.  As a quick reminder, Universal Design is a set of architectural principles to create home and work environments that are easy to use for all ages and abilities.  Visit http://ehe.osuledu/ud to learn more about Universal Design.  On-line resources include: PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets, home and personal assessment work sheets, and DVD video clips on kitchens and baths. Each county Extension office received a copy of the DVD.  Additional copies of the DVD are available for $5.00 at the OSU Extension eStore.  If you want to know more about this cooperative state project with OSU Extension, on-campus faculty, Lowe's, and Dave Fox Remodeling, just contact Pat!


EHE IS A PARTNER IN OSU/KROGER FOOD SAFETY HOTLINE

Thanks to a new partnership between the Kroger Co. and the Center for Innovative Food Technology, consumers can now contact OSU Extension's Food Safety Hotline at (800) 752-2751 (toll-free in Ohio), available weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. EHE experts from the Department of Human Nutrition and OSU Extension, along with personnel from the Food Industries Center and the Department of Food Science and Technology, support a team of three students who respond to consumers’ questions. The hotline has been operated since 1985 by Ohio State's Food Industries Center; however, a grant from CIFT, with support from Kroger, has allowed the university to hire the students.  Lydia Medeiros, Julie Shertzer, Janet Buffer and Gina Casagrande, are also involved.  The plan is to involve the self-identified “food safety” leader from each EERA.   (Source:  EHE News)

BACK TO SCHOOL!

Don’t forget that a benefit of being an OSU employee is tuition remission (in other words, classes are FREE). UGA ON-LINE FOOD PRESERVATION COURSE

Anyone interested in learning basic canning can enroll in the UGA’s, University of Georgia, online course, Preserving Food at Home: A Self-Study.  It covers: Introduction to Food Preservation, General Canning, Canning Acid Foods, and Canning Low-Acid Foods.  This free course is appropriate for anyone interested in learning more - educators, volunteers, or consumers.  The website is https://www.uga.edu/nchfp/exception_account.html.


BRANDING PHOTO STRIPS AVAILABLE

Looking for FCS-specific, ready-to-use branding strips?  Look on the CommTech Templates website to find several options.  Scroll down the page and click on the numbers | 11.1 | 11.2 | 12.1 | 12.2 | 13.1 | 13.2 | 14.1 | 14.2 | for FCS content.  Keep in the mind the idea behind the OSU Extension branding photo strips is to show clientele (real people) enjoying the benefits (healthy, happy, productive lives) of our programs, more so than the content of the programs.  According to Social Identity Theory, people are more likely to be drawn to positive images of people or situations they want to be a part of, or already consider themselves a part of.  That’s part of the reason it is important for all of us to use branding!

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans has been published jointly every 5 years since 1980 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Guidelines provide Information for people two years and older about how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. The guidelines serve as the basis for Federal food and nutrition education programs at  http://www.health.gov/DietaryGuidelines/.

Marisa Warrix, Greg Siek, Robin Stone and Monica Fink (Western Reserve EERA) were first place winners for the" Show, Tell and Win" contest sponsored by the Ohio Latino Work Force group for the development of bilingual nutrition educational materials for  Hispanic home child care providers.

Monadine Mattey (Ohio Valley EERA),  the Pike County Dining With Diabetes Program, Nutri-Cise Surprise, Pike County Diabetes Support Group and the Pike County Diabetes Coalition recently received the following funds:  $500  from Abbott Labs - Anthony Petrocelli; $3,000 - Appalachian Diabetes Control and Translation Project from Marshall University; and $4,000 - "Diabetes - A Family Matter" from Ohio University.


HAPPY RETIREMENT

Congratulations to Susan Crusey, Top of Ohio EERA, and long-time Logan County FCS Educator, who retired effective July 31, 2009 after 36 years of service with OSU Extension.  Please join me in sending her best wishes on her new journey.

AVOIDING GROUPTHINK

“A shared vision is one thing: groupthink is another.  Groupthink is faulty decision making.  It happens when group members always want to be in agreement and members openly agree with a perceived group position even if individual group members privately disagree.  It happens when members see themselves as highly cohesive and part of a special, distinctive group and as doing important work toward a common goal.  They feel they are in an in-group, a clique if you will, that becomes more important than saying anything that may disrupt people’s feelings of belonging.

To avoid groupthink, consider all members’ views before making decisions.  Bring in outside experts, and research how similar decisions have worked out in different organizations.  Encourage all members to speak up, and avoid squelching members who express outlying or unusual idea (London & London, 2007, p. 33)
