Headline: The headline is the title for each story. Keep it descriptive, yet short.

Date: Enter the date for which you would like the story to be published. This is the date that the story will both go live on the website and will be sent out via the automatic emailing system.

E-mail: Do you want this story to be sent out to those who are subscribed to the newsletter or to any of the theme areas below? If so, check yes. Otherwise the story will appear on the website but will not be sent via email.

Newsletter: This is the newsletter for your story. Not all stories have to be included in a newsletter. You only have access to post to newsletters to which you've been designated as a writer. You can be a writer for multiple newsletters, though any one story can only belong to a single newsletter.

Newsletter Order: This specifies the order in which stories are to appear within a newsletter. Stories are shown in increasing order starting at 1.

Extension Theme: If you want your story to be listed in any of the Extension Theme areas on the intranet site, check the corresponding box for that theme. The story will show up on searches for that theme, as well as on the front page of the site for that theme for a limited time. Please make sure that you are posting to the appropriate categories when selecting these theme areas. Authors that are found to post into categories that are not appropriate for the story repeatedly may have a peer review placed on their account. Stories would be posted to the newsletter then per normal, but would have to be authorized in order to be listed under a theme area.

Internet Topic: At a future point in time, any newsletter stories that are applicable to an outside audience may be displayed automatically on the State Extension website. To display these there, make sure you check one of these Internet Extension Topics. If you do not wish your story to be posted outside of the Intranet, leave these boxes unchecked.

Additional Keywords: Keywords help the search engine find a particular story. It is encouraged that with every story you include at least 3 keywords or phrases, separated by commas. To help you think of what these keywords should be, ask yourself what you would search for in order to find this story. It is usually better to have a few to many keywords than to not have enough.

Intro: The intro is the lead in for your story. This is displayed on the archive page if the long format is used, giving a short description of what the user will find in that story. It is also used for people subscribing to email digests and the newsfeeds. The intro should be placed at the beginning of the content section in addition to listed here.

Content: The content of the story is exactly that, the main content of the story. The graphical editor provides you with an easy way to format your text as well as include lists, tables and images (in .gif or .jpg format) with your stories. To find out what each button does, simply hover the mouse over the button and the button's name should appear. In short though, all the controls for tables and images are on the left toolbar, and all text formatting is on top.

If you want to have even greater control over how your text is formatted and are familiar with html, you can select the Html button at the lower right corner of the editor to view and edit the html code directly.

Sources: Stories may have sources associated with where the information came from. This is not needed, though may be added information for some stories. If you wish to include additional contact information, add someone as a source.

Files: Files are for uploading attachments that you want included with your story. These could be (but are not limited to): .pdf, .mp3, .doc, .ppt, etc. Any images we wish to include in our file should be uploaded using the graphical editor in the content section of this form.

Hi Everyone,

Several FCS educators and spouses participated in the NEAFCS (National Extension Association of Family & Consumer Sciences) just a few weeks ago in Birmingham. Ohio was well represented in presentations, posters and committees. Congratulations to Carol Chandler for her successful election to a National office, VP for Awards and Recognition. Ohio is very fortunate to have Carol in this important leadership role.

Many EERAs are meeting this fall. Please let me know if I can help provide any information as you outline roles, responsibilities, timelines, programs, etc.

Take time to enjoy the fall colors . . . my drive to work each day get more stunning than the day before!

Best Wishes . . . and

FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR SPECIALIZATION

A total of $20,000 will be available for educators to support plans for individual education and training related to specialization.  Educators may apply for up to $1,000 in a proposal to support their specialization efforts during calendar year 2010.  A minimum of five proposals will be funded in each program area.  Assistant directors will review proposals from individual educators in their program area and make final funding decisions.

Use the online application at the following link to apply for funding: http://surveys.cfaes.ohio-state.edu/cfaes/index.php?sid=14486&lang=en.

See the OSU Extension Guidelines for Educator Specialization available on the OSUE Web site: http://extadmin-cms.ag.ohio-state.edu/policy-handbook/v-human-resources-personnel/o-s-u-extension-guidelines-for-educator-specialization/?searchterm=Specialization%20Plan
In addition to the guidelines, priority will be given to proposals which address specialization needs in the educator’s EERA. Applications are due December 1, and funding decisions will be made by Annual Conference in December.  (Source:  Communiqué - September 11, 2009)

NUTRITION GRANT OPPORTUNITY

The Michigan-based Allen Foundation awards grants that primarily benefit programs for human nutrition in the areas of health, education, training, and research. The Allen Foundation recently awarded a grant to Salvation Army in Columbus. For more information: https://www.allenfoundation.org/commoninfo/aboutus.asp.

MITTNET LAUNCHED

The Managing in Tough Times resource directory, MiTTNet, officially launched July 30, 2009.  The directory can be accessed at:  http://mittnet.extension.org/.  It is fully searchable and nearly 900 resources can be found in individual and family, farm and ranch, community, and youth topic areas.  It is intended to be used by Extension educators, rather than the general public.  A national web conference to announce MiTTNet, to demonstrate the site and highlight its contents was held on July 30.  For those who could not attend, the web conference can be viewed at: http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/p78987985/.  (Source: Jane Schuchardt)

CHILDHOOD OBESITY FUNDING

An anonymous Columbus Foundation donor recently gave $20,000 to support child obesity prevention programming. Our FCS Extension proposal was selected for funding!  Gail Kaye, Program Director in Human Nutrition, will lead this grant-funded effort to expand childhood obesity prevention programming based on the Food Fit model. . . and will be soliciting for educator assistance and expertise.

TASHA SNYDER

Effective Oct. 1, 2009, Tasha will be changing her FTE appointment from .34 FTE OSU Extension to .10 FTE. She will continue to share expertise in HDFS publications/resources, develop some new pod casts on family demography, participate on teams and work closely with Kara Newby.

KUDOS . . .

Several of our FCS professionals have much to celebrate.  Congratulations to . . .

Joyce McDowell, Leader, Community Nutrition, was selected to serve on the 2010 National EFNEP Conference Planning Committee in Washington D.C. March 2010.

Marisa Warrix, Western Reserve EERA and Cuyahoga Co., was awarded $15,000 from the Bruening Foundation to expand RMRW into five more schools in the 2009-2010 school year.

Carol Chandler, Top of Ohio EERA and Union Co., was elected as the National VP for Awards and Recognition at NEAFCS National meeting in Birmingham last month. What a wonderful opportunity for Carol and valuable exposure for OSU Extension.

SHARPEN YOUR FOCUS

·         "Fine-tune your intensity.  Focus gently and guard against obsession.

·         Allow time for ideas to simmer while you do other things.

·         Direct your focus appropriately.  Find a balance between physical and cerebral pursuits, easy and challenging activities, and solitude and activities with others.

·         Let go of things that sap your energy.

·         Prioritizing helps you to be sure you're focusing on the right things.

·         Really listen to others with focus.  So often, we go through the motions and miss opportunities to learn.

·         What are the person's eyes telling you?  What about her body language?

·         Is it consistent with the words you're hearing?

·         Live, work, and play with intention (Canterucci, 2005, p. 152)."
