Indian Natural Resources Management Project

A project dealing with the conservation and management of soil and water resources in India was continued during 2006. Rattan Lal, School of Environmental and Natural Resources, is the principal investigator for this project. David Hansen serves as co principal investigator.  Funded by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust Fund in India, it is a collaborative project with the M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation located in Chennai, India. The project has involved research at three sites in India – Tamil Nadu state, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab. University research scientists from local universities are engaged in conducting the actual field work. This research has focused on the application of minimum and no tillage practices, carbon sequestration in soils and water quality.

 Rattan Lal and David Hansen visited India to review field project research and to discuss continuation plans for the project, including development of a follow on project which has been submitted to the Tata Trust Fund for funding.  This project has been tentatively funded by the proposal to continue the project that will include two additional sites (one in foothills of Jamseth Tata Trust Fund and will include two additional sites, namely one in the foothills of the Himalayas and one in the Tsunami-affected eastern coast region.
