ONE
ERA ENDS IN E.F.N.E.P.
The ‘New Era In EFNEP’ begins under the capable supervision of
Deidre Betancourt, Extension Agent, EFNEP in Stark-Summit Counties.
( We are accustomed to these kinds of working arrangements in Extension).
The knowledgeable and experienced Educators, Geraldine Culliver and Gertha
Venable continue teaching nutrition to the limited resource families
and EFNEP 4H youth in the established Teaching Kitchens and in the public
schools. They, however, look to agencies to be supportive in
outreach and helping to organize new groups in order for their teaching and
time to be efficient and effective. EFNEP continues to be an integral
part of Extension programing in Mahoning County and maintain the central
office in Canfield where they can be reached at the same telephone – 330-533-5538.
We are involved in the National Youth Sports Program in conjunction
with YSU where their aim is to help at-risk youth learn to “walk tall, talk
tall and stand tall.” Likewise, the Bremer Foundation enable us to
work with youth from Neighborhood Ministries to increase nutrition awareness
and exposure to activities that will improve their physical fitness, health,
cultural and classroom education. Churches, parks and centers
that are sponsoring day camps can call for ‘one time’ presentations on nutrition
and healthy snacks. The adult educators are involved in encouraging
participation in Jubilee Gardens and teaching food safety and food preservation
