HORTICULTURE HOTLINE FIRED UP!!!!

The 2004 Horticulture Hotline is fired up, full blast!  Many thanks to Cal Gungle, Barb Delisio and others for your continued support towards providing this valuable service to Mahoning County residents.  The Master Gardeners who work the hotline have stated that not only is there great joy knowing they are helping others with their horticulture concerns; the experience is also a great way to stay on top of old and new information relating to horticultural products and services.

So what are we seeing so far this year?  Well, according to the referral slips that we keep on file, we have seen a lot of ant problems.  We associate this to the excessive rain we have had, we believe the ants are coming up for air and getting lost (in our homes).  Anthracnose on trees is also showing itself again this year.  Look for the deformed leaves on Maple, Oak, Sycamore, as well as Dogwood and Ash.

These are just two of the many types of calls that come into our office.  Oh yea, ask Cal about the milk snake.  If you need some additional volunteer hours or if you have a morning free and would like to help out, call us at 330-533-5538 for the schedule.

MASTER GARDENERS RECOGNIZED AT JUBILEE GARDEN KICK-OFF EVENT

The Mahoning County Urban Gardening Program (better known as Jubilee Gardens) held its annual Kick-Off Luncheon May13 at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Youngstown.  The event attracted nearly 200 people.  Speeches were given, donations were presented, plants and gifts were distributed and several Master Gardeners were pointed out in the crowd for contributing to the success of that program.  Those individuals were Bob Ackerman, Lew DiLallo, Hugh Earnhart, Jeannie James, Diane Moretti, Doris Puerner and Lynn Zocolo.  Good job folks!

O.S.U. MAHONING MASTER GARDENERS TOUR Y.S.U. GROUNDS DEPARTMENT

Youngstown State University hosted the Mahoning Extension Master Gardeners for a two hour tour (both walking and shuttle bus) for our May 13 meeting.  Mr. Larry Tooker, former Fellows Riverside Gardens Horticulturist and current manager of the grounds keepers at Y.S.U., led the tour.  The tour held the attention of all who participated as we meandered through the campus.  If you haven’t been to the campus recently I recommend you schedule some time to reacquaint yourself with it again.  It is truly a gem in the city.  Many thanks to Tony Siracuse, Head of Grounds Department for helping make our visit a pleasant one.

    TILLING WET SOIL

This month (May) has brought us over 6" of rainfall.  That is +3.49" above recorded average for the month.  To date, 2004 has delivered 17.68 inches of rain, which is +4.29 inches above the normal of 13.39 inches.

Tilling wet soil is not recommended.  If soil is rototilled or cultivated too wet it could form various sizes of soil clods (lumps of soil) in your garden.  These clods once they dry become hard as rocks which make planting, cultivating and even plant growth more difficult.  The best time to till or cultivate your plot is two to three days after a rain, that is of course if your garden wasn’t saturated to begin with.
