Fire shuts down veal packer

by Pete Hisey

It took firefighters four hours to bring a blaze that shuttered the Golden Veal Corp. plant in Creston, Ohio, under control earlier this month.

There were no injuries resulting from the fire, and the office area was salvaged, but the production floor of the 40,000-square-foot plant appears to be a total loss.

Golden Veal is owned by Atlantic Veal & Lamb, the company identified as shipping portions of spinal column along with a regular air shipment of veal to Japan last week, leading to the re-closing of the Japanese market to U.S. beef products. Atlantic has since been de-listed as an authorized source for beef exported to Japan.
