May 7, 2002 - Happy 175th anniversary to John Morrell & Co. -- the oldest processor in the country

The Meatingplace.com would like to wish Cincinnati, Ohio-based John Morrell & Co. a happy anniversary -- make that a happy 175th anniversary.

A subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, Morrell was founded in Bradford, England, in 1827. It is now considered to be the oldest, continuously operated processor in the United States, according to a news release. The company has more than 6,500 employees and operates nine production facilities that ship fresh pork and processed meat both nationally and internationally.

Anniversary kick-off

Morrell will celebrate is 175th anniversary with the summer kick-off of its "Life, Liberty and Great Taste!" on-pack consumer sweepstakes. The grand prize is a Jeep Liberty and 175 first-place prizes, deluxe BBQ utensils, will also be awarded.
