The Sausage Shoppe Grabs Spotlight with Unique

    Bratwurst Promotion

    by Dan Murphy on 6/19/00

Every meat processor, no matter what size, needs to create a “buzz”

about the company and its product line. The Sausage Shoppe in

Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood recently found a unique way to

do exactly that, and it’s one The MEATINGPLACE.COM recommends

that other sausage makers consider, as well.

The Sausage Shoppe created 12 new flavors of bratwurst sausage that

were featured in a brat-tasting contest between two teams of Brooklyn,

Ohio, firefighters and paramedics. The battle was filmed for a segment

on The Food Network’s Extreme Cuisine show, which will air June 29

    at 10:30 p.m.

Here’s how the novel contest worked: Each team was given a sheet

with the names of the new bratwurst flavors, with each brat assigned a

number. Then the firefighters and paramedics had to try to match the

identity of the brats with the correct number.

The unsmoked flavors included: Cherry Bomb, Pina Colada, Pizza,

Sweet and Sour, Chocolate and Coconut. The smoked brats included

Honey and Garlic, Pepperoni, Sautéed Onion and Portabella

Mushroom, Mocha, Bacon and Cheddar, Chili, and Bar-B-Que. The

winning team identified seven of 12 correctly.

As a finale, Buzz Brats containing beer and coffee were served, and

the segment wrapped with interior and exterior shots of The Sausage

Shoppe store, showing viewers how the unique-flavored brats were

    made.

The Sausage Shoppe is also featured in the June issue of Ohio

Magazine in an article entitled “Making the Best of the Wurst,”

explaining why Ohio is the “Bratwurst Capital of America” and where to

    find the perfect brat.

(Editor’s note: Is Ohio REALLY the Bratwurst Capital of America? The

MEATINGPLACE.COM would love to hear from meat processors in

Wisconsin on that subject. Just click on “CONTACT US” to e-mail the

editors regarding any Daily News items).

Other Ohio bratwurst makers featured in the story included Buckeye

Country Meats, Strasburg; Schmidt's Restaurant and Sausage Haus,

Columbus; Jungle Jim's Market, Fairfield; The Bratworks Ltd. and

Carle's Inc., Bucyrus; and Avril Bleh Market, Cincinnati.
