WOOSTER, Ohio — Steve St. Martin, Ohio State University, will present “Breeding Soybeans to Meet New Needs,” 11 a.m.-noon, Friday, April 6, in Columbus and by video simulcast in Wooster.

A professor in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science and a member of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s (OARDC) soybean breeding program, St. Martin studies soybean varietal development, quantitative genetics and breeding methodology.

Among other projects, he is involved in a new partnership between Ohio State and the Battelle Memorial Institute to develop new soy-oil products, including soy-based lubricants, plasticizers and polyols.

“Dozens of public and private soybean breeders are at work in the U.S.,” St. Martin says. “The industry is characterized by demand for proprietary traits, rapid turnover of varieties and selection for wide-scale adaptation. What should an academic variety development program be like in such circumstances?”

Attend in 244 Kottman Hall on Ohio State’s Columbus campus, 2021 Coffey Rd., or in 121 Fisher Auditorium on the Wooster campus of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), 1680 Madison Ave.

For details about the lecture, part of a series sponsored by the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, contact series coordinator Rich Pratt, (330) 263-3972, pratt.3@osu.edu.
