CUSTAR, Ohio — From options for controlling insects and diseases to alternative growth and fertility strategies, wheat growers will find something new to add to their production arsenal at Ohio State University’s 2008 Wheat Field Day, 9-11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 19, in Wood County.

The free public event — theme: “New Tools for Your Management Toolbox” — takes place at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s (OARDC) Northwest Agricultural Research Station, 4240 Range Line Road, Custar, about a half mile northeast of Hoytville at the corner of Range Line and Oil Center roads.

OARDC and Ohio State University Extension — the research and outreach arms, respectively, of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences — are the sponsors.

“The price of wheat has increased, and more acres were planted last fall,” said station manager Matt Davis. “With this program, researchers are covering all areas of wheat production, from varietal selection through fertilization, insect and disease management.”

The presentations:

• “Wheat Breeding: New OSU Cultivars and Objectives,” Clay Sneller, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OARDC.

• “Revisiting Insect Pests on Wheat,” Ron Hammond, Department of Entomology, OARDC.

• “Wheat Quality from 2007 OSU State Trials,” Ed Souza, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Wooster.

• “Managing Head Scab with Fungicide,” Pierce Paul, Department of Plant Pathology, OARDC, OSU Extension.

• “Wheat Fertility Management and Double-crop Soybean Production,” Ed Lentz, OARDC, OSU Extension.

“Wheat producers will learn something from the program that will benefit their operation now and in the years to come,” Davis added.

The Northwest station is one of 10 OARDC outlying agricultural research stations located around Ohio.

The stations conduct research critical to their home region in areas such as field crops, livestock production, wine-grape production, natural resource management, and fruits and vegetables.
