Media are invited to attend the early-morning installation of a new 15-by-11-foot steel sculpture, "Annabelle and the Praying Mantis," at Chadwick Arboretum beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.

This will be more than an unveiling: During the installation, sculptors Pat Belisle of Plain City (http://photoblog.com/patbelisle) and Chris Saylor of Marysville will add the head to the praying mantis.

The sculpture will be installed in the arboretum's Phenology Research Garden, on the west side of Olentangy River Road, south of Lane Avenue and just north of the Woody Hayes Drive bridge. Parking is available at lots near the Agricultural Engineering Building, 590 Woody Hayes Drive.

The science of phenology studies recurring biological phenomena such as the blooming of wildflowers and tress, seasonal appearance of insects and bird migration, and their relationship to weather. Mary Maloney, Chadwick Arboretum director, hopes the sculpture will help engage arboretum visitors into phenology research that has been ongoing on the Ohio State campus since the very first day of classes in 1870. For more information on the Phenology Garden, see http://chadwickarboretum.osu.edu/gardens/ and click on Lane Avenue Gardens, and then on Phenology Garden.
